The Popcorn genre is a style of music and dancing first established in Belgium (the Land of Beers) in the late 1960s and it got its name from a discotheque called the Popcorn. This style includes a pretty eclectic and wide range of American R&B and pop songs mostly recorded in the 1950s and mid-1960s in a slow or medium tempo and often in a minor key. Popcorn can be recognized by its tempo just as much as its sound. In an article for The Guardian titled ''Belgium's 'Popcorn: the last underground music scene in Europe'' musician and writer Bob Stanley wrote ''the purity of Belgian Popcorn is its very impurity. R&B, Broadway numbers, tangos, Phil Spector-Esque girl groups, and loungey instrumentals, they are all constituent parts of a rare, and still largely undiscovered scene. It won't stay that way forever.

For years people have tried to talk me into making a box set of these sessions. Well, I’ve finally done it. Recorded the old way, direct to mono with no overdubs and no mixing. If you get it you get it, if you don’t you don’t. There are no fixes, no pitch adjusting, no vocal comps. Just pure blues. Basically, these were three different recording sessions one or two days at a time. Just improvising. Spitting out music one song after the other. The musicians are stellar. Junior Watson, Rusty Zinn, and Kid Ramos on guitar, the dynamite rhythm section of Larry Taylor on the bass and Richard Innes on the drums topped off by some beautiful piano work from Fred Kaplan. Oh, and let’s not forget the horn section of Scott Steen on trumpet and Tom Fabre, who this project is dedicated to, on tenor saxophone. I really feel like I captured some incredible work from Tom who, sadly, passed away a few years ago. A great person and a great musician. People with that combination are always missed. So what you get here is the full musical experience with very little fat cut off of it. I hope you enjoy it and thank you for all of your support. ~Kim Wilson

With the release of Johnnie Taylor's Live at the Summit Club, the Concord label's takeover of the Stax catalog from its former owner, Fantasy, has already born fruit. This set is a club date recorded in 1972 as part of the WattStax: The Living Word documentary. Taylor was bumped from the festival lineup on the day of because of time overruns. He was booked into the club with his own band and an expanded set of Los Angeles musicians. The ten cuts here have never been issued unedited, and only one, an edited version of "Jody Got Your Girl and Gone," made the film, and three others were on earlier LPs as edited versions. The performance by Taylor is electrifying. He's in a club in front of the City of Angels regulars who, according to the notes, were "fur-lined players and ice cold hustlers." Given the film stills in the booklet, this observation proves to be true. Taylor is far from intimidated, however; he simply delivers an authoritative, strutting, burning performance that engages the audience at street level. They are active participants in what makes this date so special. The band is ragged and sometimes a bit off harmonically, missing cues (especially early), but Taylor doesn't miss a step. He chides them semi-regularly -- the first time happens at the beginning of "Steal Away," a Jimmy Hughes ballad he ramps up into a funky burner after his amazing read of Isaac Hayes' and David Porter's "Little Bluebird." He simply tells them to pick it up because they've been dragging all night. "Who's Making Love," his smash 1968 hit, is here as a full-blown audience participation number, and works to stunning effect. Cuts like "I Don't Wanna Lose You," "Hello Sundown," and "Stop Doggin' Me" simply come off like the lost funky soul Holy Grail that they are. The sound is impeccable, as the music was recorded for possible inclusion in the film -- he tells the crew to get their stuff out of his way at one point. This one cannot be recommended enough.

Band of Heysek is a bunch of guys who compose and play sensuous and emotional songs. Their blues are raw and dirty.

The band was formed in 2015. All three musicians have known each other for a very long time and very well from various Brno bands. Their zero concert at the Eurotrialog festival in Mikulov was so popular that they received an invitation to the next year, but also an offer to precede the famous The Smokie in Ostrava (2015). Since then, they have given concerts in clubs and festivals, especially in the Czech Republic, but also in Poland, Bosnia and Slovakia, including the famous BluesAlive (2017).

In the autumn of 2018, they accompanied a trio of bluesmen from Mississippi on a Czech-Polish mini-tour with a stop at BluesAlive in Šumperk. In the summer of 2019, on the other hand, they headed with their concert set to their home festival in the US North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic. At the end of their blues tour, they visited the recording studio in Water Valley with two rare guests - Kenny Brown and RL Boyce (nominated in 2017 for a Grammy Award in the blues category). From the two-day recordings, the band prepared two separate albums for release, of which the first "Band Of Heysek - Juke My Joint" is out now.

A return look and listen to this historical and breathtaking collaboration between two of the great figures of modern music should naturally be prefaced by a few key facts. Although this album presents itself as the soundtrack to the film The Hot Spot, like many such releases it bares little relation to the music that was actually used in the film -- not that much of this music was actually used. All one really needs to know about the film itself, other than the fact that it was directed by Dennis Hopper, is that it is awful, even by bad film standards. That it was the impetus for this marvelous music to be made is something listeners should be thankful for, particularly fans of either Miles Davis or John Lee Hooker. Anyone who grew up with the former artist during his electric transfusions of the '60s and '70s probably wondered why he wasn't playing with John Lee Hooker the whole time, since they both seemed headed in the same direction. In fact, one wonders why it took this crummy film and the personal appeal of its director to bring these two musical giants together. That they didn't seek to do something like this on their own can be looked at as a character flaw, one that can only be forgiven after listening to how wonderfully they interact here. An important aspect of the magic is their individual genius in the art of playing blues music in such utterly personal ways. There is no mistaking the sound of either Hooker or Davis for anyone else, with layer upon layer of detail backing that up -- the actual sound of their instruments is distinctive, their choices of notes and timing completely unusual and impossible to imitate, and they both have a knack for casually making even the most basic sort of band track sound as if it is a style of music that has never been played before. No matter how many times one may have heard a bar band break into what they think is a Hooker boogie, a brief recovery period will still be required after first exposure to the tracks here. Often during his recording career, Hooker was able to get a particularly scintillating rhythm section sound going with whatever pros had been assembled for the occasion. This is one of these sessions, but it indeed makes it seem like a royal visit to have Davis blowing over the top of these grooves. There are other dignitaries as well. Blues guitarist Roy Rogers adds some tasteful slide guitar, and it could be said that it presents another melodic direction for the interaction. But when one has a choice to hear Hooker or Davis instead, most listeners will simply wish Rogers had ridden off into the sunset on his faithful horse instead of coming to this session. Taj Mahal, on the other hand, adds nice textures with his dobro, an instrument that is wonderfully versatile yet so often overlooked in anything other than bluegrass music or straight-ahead country blues. The latter genre, unfortunately, has too much of a sway over this performer's choice of picking patterns. He sounds like what he is: a revivalist who learned how to play blues in college. The rhythm section kicks the whole time, while composer and arranger Jack Nitzsche makes valuable contributions of his own. This includes a minor-key groove -- completely unusual for Hooker, who perhaps recorded in a minor key less than a half-dozen times in his entire career. The dabs of typical film score-type music seem like nothing special until there is an entrance by Davis. These sections of him extemporizing over such routine music bring to mind one of the Ralph J. Gleason profiles of Davis, which described the artist hanging out in his music room playing along with various new releases and painfully trying to reharmonize several selections from the score of Dr. Doolittle he was thinking about recording. The image is that of normal music being twisted into something different by a master at such trickery; most of The Hot Spot soundtrack, on the other hand, presents this great jazz soloist playing over blues grooves as pure as only Hooker could make happen, an interesting contrast to some of the weaker, late-period Davis, where his bands are simply straining to be funky in an old-time bluesy way. To say this is the best recording Davis made in his final period might be misunderstood as damning with faint praise. A more solid compliment would be to contrast it with other great moments from the trumpeter's career, such as Bitches Brew or Kind of Blue, and the best parts of this soundtrack contain music that is every bit as interesting and profound. As for a Hooker album, there might be others that have better blues songs on them, but this is just about the only recording the bluesman ever did with a really great jazz soloist on it. ~Eugene Chadbourne

Mel's first album on El Toro entitled "It's Her" was an immediate smash it and got benevolent reviews in many of today's leading magazines and also on online platforms. In this, her second album, Mel presents an unusual variety of songs and tempos that demonstrate further her tremendous talent and versatility.
There are ballads and rockers which she has written herself. One of the song was not originally written for her, but it destined to become identified with Mel alone.
Backing Mel and Massimo are the great musicians who can also be heard on her debut album; Michael "Humpty Dumpty" Kirscht on guitar, Axel Praefcke on drums and Johnny Pierce on upright bass. This high-fidelity recording is a true reproduction of all sounds without discrimination or distortion. The original recording was done on a Telefunken M10 recorder at 38 cm/s using BASF PER-528 tape. To effectively record the full frequency spectrum Neumann U-47, U-67 and M-49 microphones were used. Artificial reverberation from EMT-140 reverb plate.
Sessions were held at LIGHTNING RECORDERS, Berlin/Germany.

Raised in country New South Wales, Australia, Aaron began playing guitar at age 10 after being inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was influenced by his father’s record collection, especially by great blues musicians like BB King, Buddy Guy, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed and Howlin’ Wolf.

He began playing music professionally during high school. After high school he was accepted into the Conservatorium of Music on both jazz guitar and jazz vocals, where he studied music theory for twelve months before leaving to take up a short-term teaching position. He has made a living from music ever since – playing thousands of gigs throughout the world, studio session work, singing jingles for TV and radio, writing and arranging etc.

He has had the privilege of meeting, playing, recording, studying, and living with some of the world’s best musicians and singers. He has appeared on most major Australian television networks. His original songs have received airplay both in Australia and overseas.

After years of being a sideman musician – playing other people’s music – Aaron has started leading his own band, where he can play the music that excites him; the legendary African-American styles of Soul, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Gospel, R&B.

Richard Newell grew up in Canada listening to the blues. He learned to play the harmonica as a teenager and joined the Barons in 1961, releasing a single called "Bottleneck." In 1966, Newell left the band (then renamed Son Richard & the Chessmen) to join the Midknights, but then began playing with Ronnie Hawkins, who nicknamed him King Biscuit Boy. After playing with Hawkins for two years, he joined Crowbar and released Official Music (as King Biscuit Boy & Crowbar) in 1970.

He recorded solo material sporadically throughout the '70s and '80s (including 1982's Mouth of Steel and Richard Newell A.K.A. King Biscuit Boy in 1988). Poor health due to alcoholism stunted his career throughout the '90s and on January 5, 2003 Newell succumbed to the disease at his home in Hamilton, Ontario. /Biography by John Bush, AllMusic

The third time's the charm for this young Atlanta bluesman. Not only is Moanin' his most accomplished and evocative album, it is also the one that took him from being a little-known but promising up-and-comer who once backed Susan Tedeschi to a prominent solo artist who landed W.C. Handy award nominations and was featured on the cover of national blues magazine Blues Revue.

Combining stunning covers of obscure soul (James Brown's "I Want You So Bad" and Johnnie Taylor's "You Can't Win With a Losing Hand"), blues (Otis Rush's "It Takes Time" and Willie Dixon's "One Kiss"), and R&B (Mike Bloomfield's "You're Killing My Love," likely picked up from Atlanta's Theodis Ealey, who also covered it) along with his own sturdy originals, the album crackles with excitement.

Costello's soulful voice has matured, and his singing is authoritative, although without the pretentiousness that often mars many young blues musicians. Most importantly, Costello owns these songs and makes his points concisely, with most tracks running under four minutes, and some under three, a rarity for blues albums. His solos are classy, crisp, and succinct, supporting the songs without overwhelming them, and the occasional horns perfectly punctuate the tracks, adding emphasis but never overshadowing Costello's finesse and charm.

He sounds absolutely inspired here, helped by tough and sparkling originals like "You're a Part of Me" that easily hold their own with the covers. Costello also shares the spotlight here, especially with harp player Paul Linden, who co-wrote a few tracks and plays solid solos throughout. Costello's natural charisma and obvious delight in performing, along with his ability to mesh blues, R&B, and soul, make this album one of the roots highlights of 2001, and a terrific listen anytime. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Every now and again you get one of those discs that picks up a few threads that have long lain dormant for various reasons, and you are more than overjoyed that someone took the time to help make the reconnections that seem to make life richer. Little Smokey took the young — and new to Chicago — Elvin Bishop under his wing in the early '60s and taught the kid everything, from playing blues guitar to how to walk the walk. It is well-documented how Bishop's career took off when he hooked up with Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield in the Butterfield Blues Band (setting the stage for all the other twin lead guitar bands such as the Allman Brothers Band that followed). Smokey remained in Chicago and virtually gave up trying to make a living playing music in favor of a job to support the family. With the kids grown, by the '80s he started playing again. In January 2000, the two hooked up again for three nights that would be recorded by Alligator. Maybe this was to say thank you for the early help; more likely — judging by the playing — it was a return of the early love between the two. It was more than worth the wait to hear the interplay of Elvin and Smokey, backed by a more-than-capable band (a nod to S.E. Willis on keyboards) that provides strong, solid support while letting the two stand to the forefront and play off each other. Bishop has always been known as a fun-loving musician; however, he takes his chops seriously, his playing is crisp, and — as he shows here — he is at his best when playing off an equal (listen to his signature "Travelin' Shoes"!). The joy of playing that deep-felt Chicago blues with an old friend and colleague and the chance for teacher and pupil to stand up and show off their licks and progress shine through here. The banter between the two helps to push the music along to greater heights. Just listen to this gutter-crawling version of Little Red Rooster. You know the Wolf would be proud.

The three letters TPA stand for the German blues band Tin Pan Alley . Kaiserslautern / Enkenbach-Alsenborn is given as the hometown. The history of the combo goes back to 1989, when the thirtieth anniversary was already within reach. On the homepage "Live im Cotton Club" (1998), "Talking With The Blues" (1999), "Plug'n'Play" (2009) and the present record with the fine title "Blue (s) Hour" listed. »The highlights included several large appearances as a" back-up "band by the American blues legend Louisiana Red, numerous festivals (including the international blues festival Kammgarn Kaiserslautern, blues festival Leingarten, Luxembourg blues and jazz rally and the live performance with "coffee or tea" on SWR TV. «

In a quintet line-up, the Tin Pan Alley formation covers a fairly wide range of styles within the blues. On "Blue (s) Hour" the boundaries were not drawn with a hard pencil, so that the orientation to jazz fits into the musical framework without any problems.

With a total playing time of just over fifty-eight minutes, spread over eleven songs, the album is very well filled and you can look forward to a very well filled hand of original compositions. There are also cover songs by Robert Johnson , Charlie Daniels , K. White / M. Pugh ( Steamhammer) , Aaron T. Walker , and Gregg Allman .

Right at the opener "Hamster Wheel", a composition by Werner Steiner , blues rock gets this disc going at high speed. You could also consider this song as a kind of introductory round, because Albert Koch uses his harp and Werner Steiner, just mentioned, his hotly spiced electric guitar as a solo. Keysmann Knut Maurer is on fantastic, funky trails. The rhythm department made up of Frank Schreiber (bass) and drummer Helmut Koch is the driving force behind the number. Great start at "Blue (s) Hour".

With a great a cappella introduction, animating changes in tempo and the slidable guitar, "She's Loving Money" is the motivating bridge to Robert Johnson's "Crossroads". Tin Pan Alley turns the template into a rocking country blues that stands out benevolently from the cream version.

Wow, what a groove! If not the dance leg, at least the foot rocker sets in by itself. Musically, the "Bad Dreams" are not that dark. On the contrary! Here melody, rhythm and great lead vocals are used. Great radio again from the buttons. Depending on requirements, Knut Maurer commutes between keyboards or piano. The inserted twin sound of harp and guitar is the icing on the cake of the own composition. This two-instrument sound continues stante pede in the well-known "Junior's Wailing".

Albert Koch not only has a great blues voice, but is a true acrobat on the small instrument and Werner Koch promotes his great guitar runs from a large barrel of ideas. The other creative force Knut Maurer plays absolutely at eye level with the other band members.

After the great staged "Junior's Wailing", the combo focuses on contrast, because "You Don't Have To Lie (To Play The Blues)" develops its blues feeling based on jazz. In my view, this song is a highlight. "Stormy Monday" and "Whipping Post" are outside of any criticism and Knut Maurer's composition "Maisy" has a wonderful swing groove foundation on which the musicians can let off steam, so to speak. There are many layers of solos and the songwriter shows once again what he can do.

The album title "Blue (s) Hour" fits perfectly with the extensive blues of Tin Pan Alley . The almost one hour of total playing time is extremely entertaining. Recommendation!

If there’s certain familiarity that accompanies Casey Van Beek and the Tulsa Groove’s new album Heaven Forever, it’s no coincidence. Born in Holland but transplanted to Oklahoma after living in Los Angeles, Van Beek shares a sound that borrows heavily from his heartland environs and one of its musical mainstays in particular, JJ Cale.Van Beek possesses a lengthy resume — once that includes a tenure with several ‘60s bands (Peter and Gordon’s in particular as well as a group called the Vibrants that had opportunity to open for the Rolling Stones and the Dave Clark Five) — as well as early associations with Linda Ronstadt, Leon Russell, Don Henley and Glenn Frey. After playing with the Grammy nominated country group The Tractors, he found himself contributing to Cale’s album The Road to Escondido, which also found Eric Clapton playing alongside him. Van Beek continued to play with Clapton after that, and it’s clear that the blues groove and supple sway so identified with both Cale and Clapton left a lasting impression on him as well. Indeed, it’s a sound that translates well to aptly dubbed Heaven Forever. Songs such as “Sugar Bee,” “Roberta,” “Waltzin’ With My Shadow” and the title track take that same amiable, unhurried approach, resulting in an album that makes for the essence of easy listening affability. This Koko Mojo album is our second Rhythm 'N' Blues visit into Texas sand and again looks at the talent which was Texas Bred. The concept of these albums allows to source a variety of wide-ranging choice of music chosen by the theme of birth, which makes the aural sound of the album different to that of a label-based collection. The music mix as always is eclectic, beginning with; piano boogie King Amos Milburn, also featured are, Lee Graves with Henry Hayes and also in the band is Goree Carter. From his formative years Joe Tex hollers an ode to food, which fellow Texan Ronnie Dawson covered many years later. Blues superstars, T-Bone Walker, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Pee Wee Crayton, and living legend Ray Sharpe add an interesting variety of sound as does the jazz-influenced boogie of Vivian Greene. This Koko Mojo album is compiled by well-known Dee Jay and face on the music scene Mark Armstrong, who has been Dee Jaying since his early teen years. Rockin' Chair Boogie' Southern Bred Texas R&B Rockers (KMCD039) the journey into artists birth of places continues with this second Koko Mojo series of albums. Here we have the first exploration into the Lone Star State of Texas which serves up a hot bed of Rhythm 'N' Blues musical talent from artists born within this State. The concept of these albums allows to source a variety of wide-ranging choice of music chosen by the theme of birth, which makes the aural sound of the album different to that of a label-based collection. The music mix as always is eclectic and dynamic. Some of the artists featured include; the raw and raucous Little Esther, rocking doo-wop from Vernon Green and The Medallions, Joe Houston during his formative Freedom recordings, the mainly unknown Marcellus Thomas and Eddie Tex Curtis. The legendary Saxophone specialist Jesse Powell leads the band with sexual innuendos from Fluffy Hunter barely hidden. Rural bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins is rhythmic and authentic and from the formative years of Rhythm 'N' Blues, Peppermint Harris and Wild Bill Moore are developing the style. Party man Amos Milburn is the next stage of the music and his piano proficiency is unquestionable. He is featured twice, firstly with an up-tempo instrumental and closes the album with a thundering vocal rocker. This Koko Mojo album is compiled by well-known Dee Jay and face on the music scene Mark Armstrong, who has been Dee Jaying since his early teen years. Our albums have; stunning design, sleeve notes, 28 songs, mastered for the best possible sound available. The disc is housed in an attractively designed cardboard sleeve, specially constructed to avoid the use of plastic and be environmentally friendly. The album is great to play at home and perfect for Dee Jays who will find good dance-floor filling songs.

Three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams unabashedly takes on some of the human, social and political issues of our day with her boldest and most direct album to date, Good Souls Better Angels. During the course of her celebrated four-decade, pioneering career Williams has never rested on her laurels as she continues to push herself as a songwriter. On Good Souls Better Angels, she has much she needs to get out.

In 2014 and 2015, Williams released two critically acclaimed double albums back to back with Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone and The Ghosts Of Highway 20, respectively. Both releases found her experimenting with arrangements, vocals, song structure and personal subject matter. On Good Souls Better Angels, Williams changes course and chooses to forgo the personal and narrative-based songcraft that has become synonymous with her name and instead speaks to some of the injustices permeating our society. The new songs cut straight to the core with frank and honest commentary on domestic abuse ("Wakin' Up"), the constant barrage of news ("Bad News Blues") the dangerous, quick to judge and convict aspects of social media ("Shadows & Doubts") and the haunting reality of the "Man Without A Soul".

Williams recorded Good Souls Better Angels backed by her remarkable, long time band, featuring Butch Norton (drums), Stuart Mathis (guitar) and David Sutton (bass). The rock-solid unit propels the music with both fire and finesse, particularly on the raw blues number "You Can't Rule Me", which kicks off the album with equal parts attitude and swing.

Good Souls Better Angels also features some of Williams' most intimate and up front vocals on record. She addresses the pain of depression on the achingly beautiful "Big Black Train" and tenderly delivers a poignant song of hope with "When The Way Gets Dark". She encourages us to push forward on the path of promise and perseverance on the deeply soulful and moving album closer "Good Souls".

Good Souls Better Angels marks the first time Williams' husband/manager Tom Overby is credited as a co-writer on many of the new songs. The album was co-produced by Williams, Overby and Ray Kennedy, who last worked with Williams on her 1998 landmark album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road.

This is Costello's second solo album, his first since his appearance on Susan Tedeschi's hit CD Just Won't Burn. Costello is only 20 years old, but his guitar work is in a completely different league from that of the other kid blues guitarists currently causing a fuss in bluesland. Costello comes from a remarkably well-informed place as a player. This is reflected not only in his guitar style, but also in the choice of material on Cuttin' In. He has a nice feel for jump blues, as we hear on his cover of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Mellow Chick Swing," and he can do the hard-edged Chicago blues with the requisite skill and fury - check out his Butterfield-esque original "Who's Been Cheatin' Who."

The R&B influence has not eluded Costello either - his cover of Otis Rush's "Double Trouble" is handled with a soulful feel that belies his age. And Costello's not afraid to take a flyer, either, which brings us to the calypso funkiness of "Goombay Rock," a song worthy of the Squirrel Nut Zippers' attention. Costello the guitarist has snatched the key to the blues kingdom. His playing is shockingly deep for a 20-year-old. And his vocal work is nearly a match for his guitar chops; given time, that too will become very real.
