Specially priced 2CD & DVD Triple pack of Nine Below Zero's live show at the Wilbaston Hall in Market Harborough in 2003. Includes many of the bands classic tracks, fan favourites and some rare gems.

Formed in south London in 1977, Nine Below Zero built up a following playing clubs around London and soon developed a reputation as an excellent high energy live band. After being discovered by A&M artist Mickey Modern they eventually signed to A&M and released their debut album ‘Live At The Marquee’ in 1980. They went on to become one of the biggest club attractions in London and headlining a show at the Hammersmith Odeon. NEZ has since appeared on a wealth of TV shows and playing with a host of other influential musicians such as Alexis Corner, The Kinks, Paul Jones and members from Squeeze. After a seven year break in the 80’s, the band reunited for a 10th anniversary tour in 1990 and are now kicking off their 35th year as a band by touring the UK, including a six week tour joining The Stranglers as special guests.

This double CD/DVD pack finds the band in stunning form with their heady mix of bluesy R&B, featuring many of their greatest hits such as ‘Eleven + Eleven’, ‘Don’t Point Your Finger’, ‘Three Times Enough’ and ‘Down In The Dirt Again’.

JUMP. . . Yeah, Jump... it usually consisted of a combination of 5 to 10 instruments - Upright String Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, sometimes Horns and of course, a Dynamic Vocalist! These instruments were essential in building the foundation of Jump Blues music, and were used to define the form and feel of the music that we know today as "JUMP".

Who could forget the power and feeling of "Big Joe" Turner, Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Roy Brown, T-Bone Walker and B.B. King. It was a happening' thang. JUMP had it all - it was (and is) able to blend many different musical styles, colors & textures. It is a canvas upon which one is able to paint clear and pure, color with tone. Many, were the times that the great artists from the orchestras of Count Basie and Duke Ellington would sit in on these small combo settings during recording sessions. Surely this was due to their love for the simplicity, purity and clarity of the Jump sound. One artist that was a part of that era is tenor sax player "Big Jay" McNeely, blowing on such songs as "Ain't No Rockin No More" and the bluesy, smokey, "If the Phone Don't Ring". The feeling is still alive, you just can't kill JUMP.

Rockabilly, a mix of Country and Swing, is actually just another variant of Jump. Many of the early 1950's Elvis recordings were a great example of this style. Back then, Tulsa was Jumping' with Bob Wills & his "Texas Playboys" a blend of Swing and Country. This variation used many of the same basic tempos and rythyms that were the basic tenents of jump music. Using the Upright String Bass, Drums, Piano, the Lap Steel Guitar, along with a strong dynamic vocalist, they built just as much a following as the Jump Blues artists did in the rest of the country.

The tradition continues through the artists and instruments of today. Like all art, you can take the original beauty of the form, borrow from it, respect, play, and continue to evolve it, using today's technology to create new variations while still maintaining that great feeling called Jump Blues.

Guy Davis is a smart singer/arranger, having realized sometime back that the blues world encompassed more than electric Chicago bands and Delta-style soloists. On Skunkmello, he finds joy in moving from style to style, and even improvising by throwing several things into the mix to see what will happen. The collection kicks off with two covers, the first a rewritten version of "Natural Born Eastman" followed by a take on "Goin' Down Slow." The first moves at a brisk pace, fired by Davis' gruff vocal and backed by a spry acoustic mix, while the latter delves deeply into electric barroom blues. There's fancy claw-hammer banjo on "Shaky Pudding," and banjo blues on the lazy "Po' Boy, Great Long Ways from Home." To the average blues fan, this eclectic approach adds variety and keeps the collection intriguing from beginning to the end. Purists, on the other hand, may question Davis' loose approach, combining both new and traditional elements in his blues stew. It's easy to gain the impression that he wants it both ways: a sound and lyrics that evoke elements of the past (gruff vocals, songs about shaky pudding), but that is really no more than an approximation of it. Davis deserves points for moving beyond the typical blues recording, but Skunkmello remains too dependent on a clean version of traditional blues. Only "Uncle Tom Is Dead [Milk 'n' Cookies Remix]" moves beyond tradition to emerge as something that one might call progressive blues. ~Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

John Mizarolli is a former guitarist for Ginger Baker of Cream. One of Uks leading guitarists spent 4 years in the USA, then returned to the UK in 1978. He then spent years gigging, recording, touring and teaching. He achieved cult fame worldwide in 1980 joining Ginger Baker's band Energy who toured Europe, UK and behind the former iron curtain appearing on tv, clubs and arenas. As Ginger's lead guitarist he was singled out by Europe's music mags as the revelation of the band after 4 encores at a 15000 seater in Rome. In 1978 He developed a unique and historic course of guitar systems that created an industry bigger than the record industry itself.

It's ironic that in 1980 he was too busy to give tuition to Andy Summers of Police. Andy was relatively unknown then but was definitely influenced by Mizarolli's guitar sound (that jangly roland jazz-chorus chord vibe). When Gary Moore left Thin Lizzy, Mizarolli met with Phil Lynott with a view to joining. He decided that Ginger had more to offer in musicianship. So he stayed with the Cream's wild drummer, whilst being financially supported by teaching UK's most ardent guitar lovers.

Louisiana-based pianist and singer Henry Gray has a career in American roots music that goes back more than 60 years. Gray was born January 19, 1925, in Kenner, LA, now a suburb of New Orleans. He grew up in Alsen, LA, a few miles north of Baton Rouge. Henry began playing piano as an eight-year-old, and he learned from the radio, recordings, and Mrs. White, an elderly woman in his neighborhood. As a youngster, he began playing piano and organ in the local church, and his family eventually got a piano for the house. While blues playing was not allowed in his parents' home, Henry was encouraged to play blues at Mrs. White's house, and by the time he was 16 he was asked to play at a club near the family home in Alsen. After he told his father, his father insisted on going with him, and once he saw that little Henry made decent money playing blues, he had no ethical or moral problems with his son playing blues piano.

After a stint in the Army in the South Pacific in World War II, Henry relocated to Chicago where he had relatives. After arriving in Chicago in 1946, Gray began hanging out in the bustling postwar club scene there, checking out the Windy City's best piano players. One day while he was sitting in at a club, he caught the attention of Big Maceo Merriweather, then a big fish in a small pond of Chicago piano players. Merriweather kindly took Gray under his wing and showed him around the city's blues clubs, and he got to know stars of the scene, including Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. In 1956 Wolf asked Henry to join his band. Gray quickly accepted the offer and stayed on as Wolf's primary piano player until 1968. Gray also became a session player for other recordings made by Chess Records, and over the years he has recorded with many icons of the blues. In addition to Wolf, Gray has recorded or performed with Robert Lockwood Jr., Billy Boy Arnold, Muddy Waters, Johnny Shines, Hubert Sumlin, Lazy Lester, Little Walter Jacobs, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Little Milton Campbell, Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Reed, and Koko Taylor, among others. ~bio by Richard Skelly

A Blues Tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival is perhaps the finest "tribute" release to have surfaced with stellar performances from Sonny Landreth, Leroux, and Duke Robillard among others. The true blues infused swamp sound of this legendary American institution is embraced with that same raw edge that took America by storm in 1969.

The Randy Oxford Band - 2 albums: Teach You A Lesson / Festival

Randy Oxford is a Northwest Legend. He has worked with such outfits as Little Bill & The Bluenotes, Fat Cat and Junkyard Jane prior to taking on the calling of leading his own band. The Randy Oxford Band has gone through several line-up changes over the years, but they have always been consistent on putting out exciting stage performances and excellent CDs. They have represented the Northwest multiple times at the International Blues Challenge and their last trip found them amongst the finalists (actually Randy’s second time as a finalist as he reached this plateau with Junkyard Jane also representing the Cascade Blues Association).

With a new band that may just be his strongest yet, Oxford leading the group on trombone, the incredible Jada Amy on vocals, the twin guitars of Randy Norris and Manuel Morais, (Richard Sabol on drums), and new to the group on bass Polly O’Keary who has led her own popular band in the Seattle area and most recently was a member of Too Slim & The Taildraggers. This same group will once again be heading to Memphis for the International Blues Challenge representing the South Sound Blues Association in Tacoma. Delta blues, country blues, and folk blues - Felonius Smith performs the acoustic Roots-Of-The-Blues music that inspired Taj Mahal, Ry Cooder and Hot Tuna. The young & gifted phenom Nic Clark currently plays harmonica with the Felonius Smith Trio and on this release. He plays with the skill of a master three times his age, and his expressive tone and melodic sense are unequaled. His talents are widely sought after for recordings and performances in the greater Denver area.

Rounding out the trio is Scott Johnson, whose warm yet percussive approach to his upright bass provides the perfect backbeat for the groupâs historic Americana blues sound. Sometimes he switches to sousaphone, which invokes the vibe of a jug band or a New Orleans street band!

Leader and founder of the band is guitarist Maurizio Glielmo, singer and artist of a long and prestigious past in the Italian blues scene. For years, alongside the legendary Fabio Treves, he appeared on the stages of the most important Italian festivals and international as well as participated in the recording of two albums, “Treves 3” in 1985 and “Sunday’s Blues” in 1988 where there is the presence of important artists such as Chuck Leavell (formerly with Rolling Stones, Almann Brothers, Eric Clapton, and others), Dave Kelly (Blues Band) hero of British Blues, Pick Withers (Dire Straits’ drummer).

Maurizio Glielmo’s dream of the “Gnola Blues Band” was officially born in 1989 with the initial objective along the routes of the most classic blues. The band started from the interpretations of standards (Elmore James, Muddy Waters) up to blend the traditional elements in interesting compositions. The GBB is supported by the heart and soul of the pair Bertagna / Pavin, drums and bass, respectively, a granite rhythm section capable of giving space and light to the soloists by paying particular attention to the dynamics. An invaluable contribution to the piano by Roger Mugnaini, elegant accompaniment is always ready to present itself in person to Glielmo on both piano and organ.

Recorded in exquisite analog sound, Sunshine is a bold statement from a songwriter and band that draws from the last 100 years of American music and sounds truly original. Through the 11 songs (and one bonus track), many facets of the group are represented: there is the unmitigated optimism of the title track and Flow, and the irrepressible New Orleans second-line groove of Red Shoes. You Better Start Praying sounds as if it came from The Band’s Last Waltz album sessions, and Away from Meis soul balladry at its most heartbreaking. Fizzle Out is an achingly beautiful pop tune, and I Really Try to Be Good is a hypnotic minor-key rumba. The relaxed swing of Throw It to the Wolves for Love is a nod to Fats Waller, and then the band covers the immortal Fats, himself, with a glorious take of his You Must be Losing Your Mind. Besides the Waller tune, DATV has added two additional covers that have also become fan favorites, done Vagabond style. Included is the blues tune, I’d Rather Drink Muddy Water, (inspired by Aretha Franklin’s version); and Davina plays a sublime solo version of Patty Griffin’s Heavenly Day. The album closes with the bonus track, an updated version of Davina Sowers’ Under Lock and Key, the title track from DATV’s 2007 album (now out of print).

A chance to listen to Micky Moody and Friends, recorded live at the Hell Blues Festival, Norway in 2000. Micky Moody is best known for his role in the definitive Whitesnake line-up, though his vast and varied career was spawned out of a sixties school band which also included another future star, Free and Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers. Micky quickly graduated to the recording studios via the R&B combo Tramline before touring Britain and Europe with some of the countrys top soul musicians.

Joining the highly acclaimed Juicy Lucy was a large step towards rock stardom, and major tours of Britain, Europe and the USA accompanied a regular output of recorded works. After Juicy Lucy split, Micky co-founded Snafu, combining his rock-style guitar with down-home stateside grooves, and became a major contributor on the song-writing front. Snafu recorded three albums and toured extensively before the individual members headed off to pursue their different ventures. Micky then became engrossed in session work as his reputation as a versatile performer spread. Soon a phone call from David Coverdale assured Micky of a vital place in his future plans, starting with the guitar slot and co-writing position on his forthcoming solo albums, Whitesnake and Northwinds. This led to the formation of the classic Whitesnake line-up during which time Micky toured worldwide, acquiring many gold discs and much wider recognition. He even found time to record an album and a Levi jean commercial with Status Quo lyricist Bob Young. The pair also put together a band featuring Lemmie, Cozy Powell and the Nolan Sisters to record a top sixty single!

As a sideman, Micky has featured alongside such classic British singers as Graham Bonnet, Frankie Miller, Chris Farlowe, Sheena Easton, Roger Chapman, Elkie Brookes and Eric Burdon. Visitors from the states such as Meat Loaf, Matt guitar Murphy, Ben E. King and Walter Trout have all employed his talents to enhance their performances.

The fourth studio album from Texas Renegade is a powerful mix of Americana, Rock, Blues and Country.
Consider this. Twins Tyson and Eli Carver, who were born in the Texas Hill Country town of Wimberley, moved to Durango, Colo., at age 14. That same year, Andy Bertelsen moved with his family to Wimberley. When the twins graduated high school, the lure of their hometown tugged them back—when a friend introduced them to their future bandmates, their course was set. The Carvers and Bertelsen formed Texas Renegade in 2002; drummer Luke Ayres came on in 2007, and the newest addition Hunter St. Marie (perfect name for a guitar player) joined in 2010. Except for Ayres and St. Marie, it’s the only band any of them have been in (unless you count Bertelsen’s stint playing snare in his elementary-school band).

In Texas Renegade—the moniker their first guitarist bestowed on them at a high-school party— Bertelsen handles lead vocals, songwriting and guitar. Mandolinist/guitarist/backing vocalist Tyson and bassist Eli picked up their instruments at 20 and 19, respectively, after ditching fiddle lessons at age 13. St. Marie taught himself to play his fathers guitar at age 12 (upside down no less – his father was left handed), and only Ayres (drums) has played his instrument—or any instrument— consistently since early childhood.

But they’re hardly a batch of late-bloomers. Bertelsen’s voice, which could earn him honorary Braun brother status in Reckless Kelly, carries the nuances of a practiced, yet intuitive singer. With mandolin and harp as frequent lead instruments and Tyson’s harmonies, Texas Renegade creates a soulful, rootsy country-rock blend that places them squarely in the Americana realm; which is only fitting for a band whose formative influences include the Wallflowers, John Hiatt, Counting Crows, Emmylou Harris, the essential Texans and the classic rock their parents played.

Fife & Drom is the musical brainchild of husband and wife team Mark Marshall and Abby Ahmad. The House Jumpers play jump blues and rockabilly music. It's American music with great vocs, big guitar, jumping dance music, fun lyrics, and a great time! This material was originally recorded from about 1948 to 1960 by artists such as BB King, The Liggins Brothers, Big Mama Thornton, and Camille Howard.

This music was born in American cities including Memphis, New Orleans, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Kansas City. Early versions of jump blues featured horns, but well-known guitarists, such as T-Bone Walker, pioneered the addition of electric guitar to swing and jump music after WWII. Rockabilly music emerged during the same time through the marriage of rural country music to blues and swing rhythm. Often, a common thread in jump blues and rockabilly is humorous lyrics—music that doesn’t take itself too seriously. After all, life is too short.

This album began to take shape in the winter of 2012. While auditioning a number of live recordings I had not yet listened to, I came across a tape made on December 9, 2000 at a club called “Chicago’s” on Queen Street - now long gone. It was the last gig I played as a resident of Toronto. We had emptied the house, packed the U-Haul and were ready to leave for Nova Scotia the next day. Many long-time friends and musicianers attended the show, and I was happy, excited, and blissfully unaware of the tape rolling, which resulted in a loose, relaxed night of fun. Unfortunately, a huge snowstorm prevented our departure the following day, and while parked overnight, my van was broken into and eight guitars were stolen, leaving me with one - “Old Red” - my trusty Supro.

This recording documents the last night I played with “Old Tan” – my 1957 Fender Duo-Sonic which had served me well for almost 30 years. The Toronto Blues Society and the blues community came together and staged a benefit which resulted in the acquisition of a guitar made by my friend Joe Yanuziello. It is my main instrument today and was used for the studio part of this record. I chose six songs from the live recording, then booked a day at The Rogue Studios in Toronto and recorded eight new tracks. My old pal David Wilcox was happy to play when I invited him down - until that day in the studio, we had not played together for 37 years ! Colin Linden continues to be a great friend and supporter, and I was so glad he could whup some guitar on my tribute to Hubert Sumlin, as Colin and I share a long history of love for the Howlin’ Wolf’s music.

So… this disc has some new original songs, as well as a glimpse into a typical night of live performance, graced by a couple of old friends who sat in…. I hope you enjoy it. ~Morgan

Brilleauvator is an unplugged acoustic adventure, featuring a list of songs from a diverse range of artists that inspired the formation of Brilleaux back in 1999. This is what I describe as a "sit down, shut up, and listen" album as opposed to the usual Brilleaux "get up and dance" kind of album.

Not everything is blues, Not everything is British, and Not everything is original, but it still has a certain Brilleauxness about it, and it does include a couple of previously unrecorded Brilleaux originals that fit the unplugged genre.

When we were offered the opportunity to record this live show, we almost gave it a miss as we already had a live album, and were in the process of making plans for a new studio album. However, at the last minute we thought “what the hell” and did it anyway, more as an opportunity to roadtest a few new songs before we took them to the studio. Following the precedent set by our previous live album, this recording also features 3 previously unrecorded, unreleased tracks which we anticipate appearing on our forthcoming studio album.

A powerful, no-holds-barred set of high-energy rhythm and blues, comprising of 5 Brilleaux originals and 5 British R&B classics, in the kind of show Brilleaux fans have come to know and enjoy. What you hear on this album is an unadulterated 100 percent live recording of the evening’s proceedings.
