Backstop has released Billy Proulx's new CD "U.S. 61". It is a collection of recordings previously unreleased on the web, with one exception. It contains 13 tracks, six of which are from the band 'Bongo Straits'(1996 to 2002). There is a track from 'The Vintage Cowboys': 'Rode Across Texas ' which was released as a single in 2010. The title track is the final song on the 'Bongo Straits' debut CD and features Billy on dobro. There are also two tunes from Billy and Johnny Magic, three solo efforts and a studio version of 'Don't Cha Love Me Babe' with Crew members Erle Saunders on guitar and Rick Henderson on drums. The liner notes contain the story of each song. All the tracks reflect Billy's americana roots. While songs like 'U.S. 61', 'Ticket Agent' and 'Baby What You Want Me To Do' represent his acoustic blues side, which spans Delta and Piedmont styles, offerings such as 'Don't Cha Love Me Babe' and 'Three O'Clock and I'm Rockin'' are more Rockabilly in nature and conjure up a Memphis feel.

So listening to this collection is much like taking a trip along that famous highway it is named after. If you love Americana, down home folkie blues and good old Rock n Roll you're gonna love this CD.

This is the second CD from the No Refund Band (NRB), a follow-up to the critically acclaimed self-titled first CD. This recording reflects a natural progression for the band, filling this CD with 9 originals and the cultivation of the NRB sound. The personnel remain the same with Ricky Jackson, (Lead Singer/Lead Guitarist), Rik Robertson (Bass), Mike Crownover (Rhythm/Lead Guitar), Anthony Terry (Saxophone) and Jim Brady (Trumpet). NRB has evolved into a solid team of songwriters, band mates & friends that seem to personify the stuff successful bands are made of. “Current State”, is NRB’s statement of the Blues. From the gritty “Buy the Blues”, the hard driving “St. Louis Bound” to the softer grooves of the title track, “Current State of Blue” and “Favorite Fool”, the Latin inspired grooves in “Love Unmade” and the driving horns in “I Gotta Play”, there is a song for every mood. There are no two grooves alike on this CD as the band shoots for originality and energy in each tune. NRB’s lyrical versatility is illustrated in the song writing credits. Jackson leads the way with five songs, Crownover and Brady join in with a song apiece and the Jackson, Robertson, Crownover team add two more co-writes to round out the originals.

While the extraordinary fiddler Vassar Clements is known for his countless recordings in the world of bluegrass and country music, he's also a convincing blues interpreter. He is matched with a wide-ranging group of musicians and repertoire by producer David Grisman in this delightful Acoustic Disc CD. Clements' playing takes on an almost conversational tone throughout a good part of these sessions, while he is obviously having a rollicking good time with his fellow players, no matter the setting. The legendary bluesman Robert Johnson's "Beatrice Got a Phonograph" is an amazing duet by Clements with Roy Rogers (who sings while playing an amplified Martin guitar), though it is the leader's personal sound that leaves a lasting impression. His fiddle almost seems to smirk throughout Tampa Red's "Dead Cats on the Line," which is also highlighted by Bob Brozman's guitar and Bobby Cochran's lead vocals, with Norton Buffalo providing harmony. It's hard to beat the interplay between Clements, Buffalo (on harmonica), and guitarist Bob Brozman in the trio rendition of "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning." Clements and Brozman evidently concocted "Fiddlin' and Faddlin'" in the studio, with Brozman also playing percussion on his guitar behind the leader's blistering introductory solo. Elvin Bishop adds a touch of humor with his amusing originals, including the down-home blues "Dirty Drawers" and the funky "That's My Thing," adding Norton Buffalo's soulful harmonica. Maria Muldaur's gritty vocals shine in Doc Watson's "Honey Babe Blues" and "I Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle." Dave Matthews is at the piano for the infectious "Mambo Boogie" (co-written by Clements, Matthews, and Buffalo). All in all, this is a very entertaining meeting by a group of seasoned musicians. ~Ken Dryden

The follow-up to this pair's Jubilee album finds them basically starting where they left off. And fans should be thankful for that. The instrumentation is top-notch and the selections seem to suit the record perfectly. A great example of this is the haunting but folksy reworking of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire," which is still dark but has a certain hint of brightness thanks to the use of bazouki and tamboura. However, the original material definitely measures up to the covers, especially the smooth and tender "Sometimes," which glides along effortlessly. Meanwhile, Manx and Breit weave more magic with the strolling, ambling "Bottom of the Hill," which is quite catchy. Think of a song by Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch and it's a fair comparison. This is definitely truer during the rootsy and looser "Steal," as Manx and Breit mix roots, folk, and blues impressively. The album is offset, though, by pretty instrumentals, the first being "Better Man Blues," which has an airy yet dark quality running through it, resembling a piece of a soundtrack score thatMark Knopfler hasn't gotten around to yet. However, a rather heady, psychedelic-era tune called "Death Have Mercy" brings to mind Jeff Beck's work circa Frankie's House. Meanwhile, the title track is the Delta blues personified, even if there are flourishes of guitar strumming over the standard slow-creeping blues chords. For the homestretch, Manx and Breit create the gorgeous and cozy "Hang On," which sounds like it was recorded in one take as the sun was coming up. The album, as it states on its cover, is indeed supreme quality. ~Jason McNeil

With an now-unascertained yet cracking band where Hammond backs his six-string twang, Collins rocks tightly from the off on a selection of classics such as the groovy “Mustang Sally”, a reflection of Albert’s Texas connection, and Iceman’s own Chicago-striped perennials, the cosmic “Deep Freeze” and “Thaw Out”, yet is the most moody on slow numbers like “So Tired” or “How Blue Can You Get” where he engages an audience in the enchanted call-and-response.

More traditional approach is obvious on Collins’ bell-chiming reading of “Baby What Do You Want Me To Do”, to which Albert applies a hilariously lazy slant as if to give Jimmy Reed’s tune another meaning, and in the elegant shuffle “Backstroke”, present here also in a studio version alongside other aforementioned singles. Among the bonus tracks, laid down from 1958 to 1962, are unhurried “Defrost” and “Freeze” with a slinky sax solo, plus the fluttering, brass-wielding “Albert’s Alley” – quite commercial for the bluesman’s money, yet infectious to the core. Cool in both senses of the word, and at the same time hot as hell, Albert Collins’ music must be experienced in this setting, so hop on and roll with it.

Deluxe Edition is a solid, albeit imperfect, 13-track collection of highlights from Albert Collins latter-day recordings for Alligator. There are only a handful of genuine classics, but there are a lot of great performances that spotlight Collins stinging guitar work and impassioned vocals. This record presents a set of unusual, yet satisfying traditional and original compositions. Taylor's choices of less well-known numbers, such as Howlin' Wolf's 'I Didn?t Mean to Hurt Your Feelings' and Jimmy Reed's 'Signals of Love,' reminds the listener of how deep the wellspring of blues is. And his take on some are pleasantly surprising: on Elmore James' 'Knocking at Your Door', Larry chooses to downplay the guitar and focus on the vocals, singing it as if it were a Bobby Bland ballad. It’s only fitting that Larry Taylor, who was nurtured by a musical family, in a house visited by the elders of the blues, on a street named for a famous composer, should have a life filled with music and surrounded by creatively gifted friends and family.

The first Blue Commotion gig in February 2012 was a culmination of a ten-year musical partnership between Zoe Schwarz and guitarist Rob Koral. Through their intense musical journey and compatible desire, they developed a perfect collaboration and empathy, which, when analysed, comes from two completely different starting points. Because of this melting pot of musical diversity, there is a depth and uniqueness to the band's music which is hard to pigeon-hole and categorise. Into the mix comes the sheer virtuosity of each of the band members who are allowed the freedom to express their musical authority, and stamp their own personal magic to the song writing of Zoe and Rob. A testament to this chemistry is the sheer volume of music coming out of the band, and 'Exposed' is Blue Commotion's third album in two years.

Zoe's unique, yearning vocal style is blended with Rob's ability to come up with catchy vibrant riffs and musical arrangement, which stretch the term 'blues' and keep it moving forward so as to be relevant for our current times. There is no ridged musical template for Blue Commotion, the only stipulation is that it feels good, tastes good and sounds good. The band pride themselves on filling their 'live' and album sets with original music. During this two-year period the band has covered an enormous amount of ground and received over whelming critical acclaim, with a growing and steady stream of festivals and club dates through out 2013 and again for this year. Spanning over two decades, The Big Bang has quietly (except when onstage) continued the tradition of hard rockin' American blues music - entertaining audiences with their unique onstage chemistry and original music. The band has also been instrumental in introducing this American art form to countless members of younger generations, in part through their early influence on Jonny Lang - with Big Bang guitarist Ted Larsen serving as Jonny's original guitar instructor and the group performing as Jonny's backing band in the early years of his career.

Kid Jonny Lang and The Big Bang had a big impact on the music world in the mid 90s - launching Jonny into a now legendary career. They were honored with the award of Best Blues Band at the 1996 Minnesota Music Awards. After parting with Jonny, the band continued entertaining audiences in the upper Midwest with Michael James taking over lead vocals.

After a 13-year hiatus, the group is now reunited, recording new music, and performing live on a limited basis. Their chemistry, intensity, and passion for their style of blues music remains unique today. The band's recent reunion shows have taken audiences by surprise and brought them to their feet. A Big Bang performance is a one-of-a-kind experience.

The years have ravaged James Cotton's once booming voice but his powerful harp playing hasn't lost a step, as one spin of Giant will confirm. His return to the Alligator label that released two Cotton albums in the mid-'80s and another with him as one fourth of 1990's classic Harp Attack! harmonica quartet is a chugging contemporary blues set that allows "Mr. Superharp" plenty of room to blow. Since guitarist Slam Allen handles the vocals, Cotton can play during the singing, something that eludes all other harmonica playing/lead vocalist frontmen. Allen is a competent if not terribly distinctive singer, but he delivers the tunes with adequate enthusiasm. The set is a mix of covers, including three relatively obscure ones from Cotton's ex-employer Muddy Waters and originals that don't expand the blues genre but sit comfortably within its parameters. Surely the world doesn't need more versions of worn-out chestnuts such as "How Blue Can You Get?," "That's All Right" and "Since I Met You, Baby," yet as vehicles for Cotton's meaty solos they are tolerable. But it's on the few instrumentals such as "With the Quickness" and the closing slow tempo moan of "Blues for Koko" that the harpist best struts his still nimble mouth work without the distraction of lyrics. The music is predominantly Chicago-style blues with a smidgen of contemporary gloss, but the Cotton/Allen co-write of "Change" adds a slick, bouncy funk beat in keeping with Cotton's High Compression disc. He switches between a tautly amplified sound and leaner acoustic attack, laying down a varied approach to his playing that shows him to be frisky yet powerful, regardless of whether or not he plugs in. A soulful take of the Syl Johnson hit "Let Yourself Go" brings tough Memphis R&B to the proceedings, further varying the approach. While this isn't in the league with Cotton's best work, it's a consistently enjoyable listen and shows that he continues to punch out the bold harmonica fire that inspired Muddy Waters to stick with him for over a decade, even in the home stretch of his storied career. ~Hal Hoowitz

ritish rocker Johnny Spence was born in February 1942, and started playing rock'n'roll already in late 50's. In the early 60's he played bass for Johnny Kidd and the Pirates for five years. Classic Pirates line-up featuring Johnny Spence on bass, Mick Green on guitar and Frank Farley on drums played on most of Johnny Kidd's greatest recordings and hits. They made their first recording on their own (without Kidd) already in 1964, the single "My babe"/"Casting my spell" (featuring Spence also on vocals) is ever since considered a classic. In the mid 70's the classic line-up of the Pirates came back, and very soon got the reputation of being the greatest and wildest rock'n'roll trio of all time. From that time we have the saying "never follow the Pirates". They were unbeatable on stage, and also made some great albums. During all these years Johnny Spence has also played with various other legendary artists, for example bass for Jerry Lee Lewis.

Doctor's Order is Finland's finest and toughest rock'n'roll trio, who started in 1998 and ever since has toured and amazed audiences with its hard driving music and action packed stage shows all over Finland and also in Sweden. So far they have released ten studio albums, which have sold very well and which have got raving reviews. The Pirates and Doctor's Order used to quite a few successful tours together in Finland in 2005-2007. Things led to another, and already in 2007 a six track mini-album "Doctor's Order with Mick Green: "Cutthroat and Dangerous" (Goofin' Records) was released, Johnny Spence guested on one track. Once again one thing led to another and Johnny Spence & Doctor's Order started to tour together, the co-operation started in 2008, and they have been on the road together ever since. The album "Full Throttle No Brakes" was released in 2009, and the follow-up album "Hot and Rockin'" in 2011, both featuring a stunning set of rock'n'roll, rockabilly and rhythm & blues. Both albums have sold well, and got raving reviews everywhere.

Third album "Kickstart Your Mojo" by Johnny and his fellow doctors was released in September 2014 By Goofin' Records. It features 12 new studio recordings, it features both hardrocking and rolling versions of rock'n'roll and rhythm & blues-classics picked by Johnny Spence and also also a bunch of brand new originals written Johnny himself. The sound of the album is tough, rough and huge. This is truely a unique and historical release. A great rock'n'roll record indeed! So once again it's about time to start shakin' all over!

Blue Goat Records Coming out with another back-crackin’ album of funk, rock, and blues, John Lisi & Delta Funk generated eleven brand-spankin’-new tunes to enliven the spirit. Touching on subjects reflecting the city they love, the appropriately entitled album Take It to the Bridge! is a perfect example of tight, feel-good music. Guitarist John Lisi not only contributed to writing every song on the album, but also produced the piece of work himself at Graveyard Studios in New Orleans. What resulted is the homegrown blending of blues and funk the New Orleans guitarist is so famous for engineering. Kicking things off with a blues-driven stomper called “Chicken Fried Steak” in which Lisi sings of his hunger for “chicken on the bone,” the album stays at a consistent tone, utilizing each member of the six-piece group throughout. A two-man horn section, as well as the extra-fl avorful vocals of Queen Pleshette, truly adds that extra bit of tastefulness that brings the album above those in the same category. Lisi also applies the lap steel guitar in songs like “I’ll Make You An Offer” to again elevate the band’s ingrained sense of creative instrumentation. The songs are varied, sometimes making you groove, and other times making you just want to lay back. John Lisi & Delta Funk serves up a healthy dose of southern living and good-feeling music in their newest album.

b. Major Meriweather, 31 March 1905, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, d. 26 February 1953, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Big Maceo learned piano while living in a suburb of Atlanta in his early teens. In 1924 he moved to Detroit where he made his name on the local blues scene. In the early 40s, he made a series of classic recordings with the Chicago guitarist Tampa Red. Maceo's piano lends a distinctive toughness and weight to Tampa's records, while the guitarist complements the other's superb sides with his supple and beautifully expressive slide lines. Maceo's "Worried Life" was a big hit, and has become one of the most covered of all blues songs, while most of the other tracks he recorded for the Bluebird/Victor company are of equal quality. These ranged from the plaintive "Poor Kelly Blues" to powerful instrumental pieces such as "Chicago Breakdown". The main claim to fame for Rockin Sidney is as creator of 1985's Louisiana zydeco smash international hit My Toot Toot (covered by everyone from Denise LaSalle to Fats Domino to John Fogerty). That hit is included on My Toot Toot along with other material from his mid-80s recordings but an added bonus to this collection is the selection of Sidney's earlier classic Jin label material (made between 1959 to 64) and including such gems as No Good Woman and You Ain't Nothing But Fine later covered by The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Recorded Live at the Bluetone Cafe October 24th, 2003. Guitar & Lead Vocals: Todd Wolfe; Bass & Vocals: Eric Massimino; Drums: Dave Hollingsworth.

Todd began playing on the New York scene back in 1979 with his band Nitetrain, a trio that clearly reflected Todd's influences—60s bands like Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac and other bluesy-rocking-jamming bands. The wave of guitar players that included Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Bloomfield were and are influential and evident in Todd's style and approach to guitar-playing. His next venture was Troy & the Tornados, a band based in the New York metro area. Todd met two women in this time period that would eventually play a part in his guitar-playing and song-writing experience: Carla Olson of the Textones and Sheryl Crow, at the time an unknown back-up singer. By the late '80s, Sheryl had sat in several times with the Tornados in New York City. Eventually Todd decided to fly to Los Angeles and write with Sheryl and showcase their new band in hopes of a record deal. Nothing came of this particular venture, but these two would find each other again on the same stage just a few years up the road!

After relocating to Los Angeles with a revamped line-up, Todd began to perform in clubs in southern California, while also scoring music for the Playboy Channel and connecting with old friend Carla Olson and her latest band. But it wasn't long before Todd was back with Sheryl Crow, who had just completed her about-to-be-released debut album, the multi-platinum Tuesday Night Music Club. Crow needed a touring band, including a lead guitarist that could add some extra excitement to the live shows, and Todd filled that role from 1993 until 1998.

Todd eventually went on to form several bands, including a talented bunch dubbed MojoSon that were signed to A & M Records and included alumni of Sheryl's band along with alumni of Sun 60 and Five for Fighting. With parent companies swapping ownership of A & M Records, the MojoSon album sadly was never released. Always active, always playing, Todd has never slowed down. Todd has had many excellent partnerships with fine musicians from coast to coast.

Of course he’s a mainstay on WWOZ in New Orleans, Louisiana where he got his start singing as a child in his family's barbershop quartet. At the age of 19 he became a street musician in the French Quarter, singing and playing guitar, and stealing licks where ever he could. He tried a year at LSUNO- enjoying only music classes & concerts he decided not to stay but that's where he met his wife Gretchen. They spent 8 years traveling in Arkansas & Texas with the band, The Borderline Boogie Blues Band Baby. Finally, ready for their own home, they moved out to the country to raise their family. His music has matured in the roadhouses and bars of Louisiana and Mississippi, establishing a strong fan base through his powerful rapport with each listener.

Blue Baron, a longtime fixture on the Los Angeles/Southern California Music scene, is originally from the Southside of Chicago. Having been raised there during the late 60’s in the midst of the Electric Blues Revolution/Evolution, Blue absorbed the sounds, rhythms, and feels of that era, all of which are heard in his playing today. Blue is an outstanding guitarist, vocalist and songwriter whose passion, energy, and dedication to his craft captured the ear and heart of Spann Records, the label which has released his first CD, Out of Blue and now his second and most recent CD, Broken Radio.

Broken Radio marks a return to a more basic and bare bones form of Rock N Roll and Rockin’ Blues as Blue utilizes the trio form of Bass, Guitar and Drums. The power of Blue’s guitar work and vocals has never been better as the rhythm, the passion and the soul come from deep within and soar to new heights. All songs are packed with an abundance of rhythmic gyrations, tasty guitar licks and fills, and a vocal style that touches the listener deeply within the heart and the soul.
