Chris Kramer and the blues have been found - and have changed. Whoever thinks that the blues is only a low-pitched suicide, Kramer has never seen live. Because he lives the blues with a huge portion of self-irony and humor, Chris gives the genre a new own note. Apart from the high musical demands, this makes his concerts highly entertaining, entertaining, and sometimes drives the audience into the eye. He talks about how the beak has grown in the Ruhr area, he plays and sings with his own song material, which reflects the problems of everyday life, cariculates them and gives the amused listener often a new, casual and always entertaining view the things.

The "German Blues Award" is awarded in two-year-olds. The winner of the German Blues Award is Chris Kramer, who is a true songwriter, as well as a singer and a virtuoso instrumentalist on harmonica, guitar and dobro. Peter Maffay and his blues-harp were involved several times for CD recordings and concert tours. Chuck Leavell (pianist of the Rolling Stones) says about Chris: "Oh, what an amazing harp player!". Cream-bassist Jack Bruce called him a "master of the blues-harp.", "Simple Minds" -Drummer Mel Gaynor praised his versatility and he was a musical guest both at Jürgen von der Lippe and at Götz Alsmann.

In addition, the sympathetic Ruhrpottler has worked with countless national and international musicians, wrote harmonica books, given workshops and several television stations as musicians - on WDR television, even with his own "planet knowledge" broadcast on America, the blues And Chris Kramer ...

The Hohner instrument maker, world market leader in the production of tongues such as harmonicas and accordions, gave Kramer a special honor: Hohner produced a Chris-Kramer "Signature" harmonica, a personalized model according to its specifications. This recognition by Hohner was previously, for example, John Lennon and Bob Dylan, who also received their "Signature" performance, which highlights the importance of Kramers in the "Blues-Harp" division. ~google translation

Edwin Joseph Bocage known as Eddie Bo was born in New Orleans on September 20th 1930. A singer and pianist schooled in jazz, he was best known for his blues, soul and funk output as a performer, arranger, composer and record producer in the city. Eddie worked with over forty different record labels in his time and incredibly, released more singles than anyone else from New Orleans except Fats Domino.

He worked with Big Joe Turner, Earl King, Guitar Slim, Johnny Adams, Lloyd Price, Ruth Brown, Smiley Lewis, The Platters and more. It was while Chris Barber was playing with Dr John for a month in New Orleans during 1991 that a friend suggested that Chris should rent Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint's "Sea-Saint" studio for a couple of days to cut Eddie Bo with some of New Orleans' finest on the session.

Eddie jumped at the opportunity and rounded up some top guns, starting with Bobby Bland's long-time guitar player Wayne Bennett. Born in 1931, Wayne had also played with an impressive bunch including, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites and many more.

Eddie had wanted electric bass and tuba over the two days and so in came Charles "Chuck" Moore and Walter Payton. An associate of the Neville Brothers and Allen Toussaint, Chuck had played electric bass on recordings with Guitar Slim Jnr., Rockin' Dopsie, Marva Wright, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Zigaboo Modeliste and others. Walter, a stalwart of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Young Tuxedo Brass Band had also participated in the many classic New Orleans recordings including Lee Dorsey's "Working In A Coal Mine", Aaron Neville's Tell It Like It Is" and Robert Parker's "Barefootin'". On the second day, Chuck got called to another session and but Walter stepped in and surprised everyone by playing bass guitar style on his string bass to great effect.

Then Eddie got the hottest drummer in town. Russell Batiste Jr., was just 26 years old on this session. He had joined the Funky Meters a couple of years earlier when they were reincarnated following the breakup of The Meters and was on fire over this two-day session.

New Orleans local "Alto Red" Morgan played Alto Sax and Chris Barber played Trombone. According to Chris they had no rehearsal and just made up their parts on the spot.

"The tapes remained in Chris' archive until 2015 when he sent me a CD listening copy. The instantly infectious, pre-Katrina New Orleans funk exploded out of my speakers, transporting me to Crescent City for the best part of an hour and rendering me oblivious to the phone and occasional tentative taps on my office door. Now it's your turn to step into the time machine." Malcolm Mills. Chairman. Proper Music Group Ltd. 2016

Eddie died in 2009, a sorely underappreciated veteran of the New Orleans R&B scene. Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint were among those performing at his memorial.

10 years of existence, more than 500 concerts in France, Switzerland, Belgium, and three albums on the clock, the Mojo is a well oiled machine...The engine is still running, always on the road, they're preparing a 4th album for 2017.

On stage, they are sincere and unbridled. It's rough, it stains, it sweats, it breathes the blues, the juke joints, it makes you want to swing, dance, surrender to the boogie. This blues will grab you once and won't ever let you go...

Drums – Ted Gainey; Guitar, Vocals, Written-By – Robert Belfour.

Robert Belfour's sophomore effort for Fat Possum -- at 63, he is one of the youngest artists on the roster and is by far the most "polished," if the Delta blues can ever really be called that -- proves his debut was indeed only a beginning. In stark contrast to his labelmates, Belfour strictly plays acoustic blues, but he plays them with the same dark, trancelike feel of Junior Kimbrough, haunting spookiness of Fred McDowell, rhythmic intensity of John Lee Hooker, and sprawling drawl of Lightnin' Hopkins. Ted Gainey aids Belfour on a drum kit. While the first album was all of a piece, and everything but the vocal seemed to be recorded at the same level (and even then, Belfour couldn't always be understood among the ringing guitars and shuffling drums), Pushin' My Luck is nervier, a bit more edgy. Belfour's truly nearly unbelievable singing is a bit more in the foreground, enough to add to the hypnotic repetition in his music, while the drums -- played no more elaborately than Meg White's in the White Stripes -- are mixed just a tad higher, bringing it extremely close to the punch this stuff has when played in front of a live audience. Fans of Kimbrough's guitar playing -- or Ali Farka Toure's, for that matter -- will be instantly drawn to the polyrhythmic, droning chords and ambling, elegantly raw, slippery fills that Belfour plays, whether it's on "Hill Stomp," the title track, "I Got My Eyes on You," "Sweet Brown Sugar," or "I'm Gonna Leave," which closes the set. The vibe is the same everywhere; this is deep, hot Mississippi blues full of a slow, steamy, writhing sexual vibe; twisted soul; and a sense of foreboding mystery that cannot be mentioned, let alone explained. This is the first great blues record of 2003 and if it isn't nominated for the W.C. Handy Award, the damned foundation should be disbanded on the basis of deafness. I hope this guy lives to be a 100 and makes a record every year he's on this planet. Forget everything you just read: This record is amazing; just buy it. ~Thom Jurek

Big Dog Mercer - 2 albums: Big Dog Mercer / Attack Of The Southpaw

“I’ve been told that a musician doesn’t pick the Blues, the Blues picks the musician. I love all kinds of music, but when the Blues grabbed me...it never let go.” ~ Marty "Big Dog" Mercer

For close to two decades, Marty “Big Dog” Mercer’s heartfelt, southpaw Blues and soulful voice have growled through the Chicagoland music scene. Mercer’s ability to combine emotional lyrics with aggressive guitar playing and/or slide guitar abilities makes him an artist unlike any other. The 6'10” 300 + lb man owns every stage he walks on and his personality is as large as his stature.

Here's another group of guys that have been overlooked over and over again throughout the years. They are all top-notch players and this community owes them many a thanks for years of first class music and entertainment. "Begin Again Lounge" is a great CD. Bailey has always been a good writer, even going back to his days with Lamont Cranston, but on this CD, his writing skills shine. He's penned just about every tune, or had a hand in it. "Gonna Walk" is a good opening tune to get your toes tapping. An easy going beat with never ending great piano work, this is a keeper. It sounds a bit like it has a past Lamont Cranston stamp on it.

Joe Juliano is another that just doesn't get his due it seems. Joe has one of the most versatile voices out there, and it really stands out on the second track "Changes", which he penned. This CD is filled with great Juliano tunes that at times, remind me of that STAX era sound of past. They are all great 'make you think' songs. "Cigarettes And Whiskey", "Time Will Let Us Know" and "Love Is Gonna Happen" are all great tunes and good choices to compliment Bailey's work.

Then, there's the track that has always been my favorite ever since Andy first pulled it out with Lamont; "Mississippi River Boy." Live, he gets the whole audience singing along on this one. What an added treat to have guest star Bernard Allison ripping guitar solos throughout. And… way to go Jeanine and Michelle for the great job on background vocals. Andy lets the Hammond chops really fly on the mellow instrumental "Eastside Shuffle". "Heart Of St. Paul" is another of Bailey's 'good time' tunes that reflects his Eastside presence. Again, great guitar work by Bernard. "My Dog" is a funky, upbeat romp that makes you chuckle on and off throughout. It's evident that Andy's dog in those days, Blackjack, was an inspiration in many ways. The next couple of Juliano tunes; "One Shot" and "Road Kill" are once again a testament to what a great writer Joe really is. The closer, "Begin Again" makes you feel like you're really sitting in the 'Begin Again Lounge', sipping a few, taking a well deserved break, exhausted after a night of dancing to the Andy Bailey Band. The way Andy and Joe trade vocal lines is brilliant. Rounding out the group is Craig Gallas on drums and Leon McCormick on bass. Special guests include; Bernard Allison on guitar, Kevin Nord on saxophone, Laurie Glasser on trumpet, Gerry Francis on guitar and Michael Patrick on bass.

The bulk of this disc emanates from a 1986 session held at the radio station WRDE, catching the combo raw and wild on nice readings of "Mama Talk to Your Daughter," "Bad Avenue," "Gambler," and "Ain't That Nice." These tracks are simply loaded with stinging guitar from Slim and John Primer and it's Primer contributing the lead vocals on "Think" and "She Moves Me." A hot session that's pretty representative of their down-home sound. ~Cub Koda

Jessy Martens & Band - 2 albums: Break Your Curse / Touch My Blues Away

Starting up in late 2010, live wire Jessy Martens and her band very quickly rose to the top of the rock and blues scene. Winning the DEUTSCHER ROCKPREIS 2012 (“GERMAN ROCK AWARD 2012”) for best rock band/best rock singer and the GERMAN BLUES AWARDS 2012/2014 for best blues band / best blues singer, as well as receiving the award for best blues album of the year for her songwriting debut “Brand New Ride”, are a testament to the unanimous enthusiasm of audiences and the press. The band has even made its way into mainstream radio.

It’s no wonder! The potential of her „voice to die for“(rocktimes) seems limitless: at times she roars as if she has just come from a night of boozing and partying, and at others she sings with a clear voice, simply “straight”. One moment she will sway flirtatiously through a number, only to go straight to the heart of the audience with emotional abandonment in the next song. 100% authentic, supported by her “outstanding band” (Deutschlandfunk), Jessy Martens is an experience not to be missed. “Live on stage” is precisely her thing. Anyone who has been there knows: this lady bowls you over and moves you to tears. A real class act, made in Germany!

A silhouetted raven, with open beak and curled tongue, graces the cover of Ross Neilsen’s Elemental. Blues fans, if this reminds you of Edgar Allan Poe, you’ll be forgiven for thinking this CD contains only the darkest shadows of your favorite genre. Surprisingly, it doesn’t. On his sixth studio album, Canada’s Neilsen combines atmospheric blues rock, country blues, and ballads for a refreshing experience. Some die-hards might be in the mood for more guitar shredding and grittier vocals, but others will appreciate Ross’ lower-key approach to the blues. Reminiscent of a young Neil Young or Tom Petty, Neilsen pours his heart out through keen songwriting skills and keen musicianship. In the course of Elemental, he plays wicked-good acoustic and electric guitars while providing lead and background vocals. His singing is a bit nasal, at odds with his shamanic tough-guy persona. However, anyone who hears him will know he means every word, whether rough or reflective. ~Rainey Wetnight

In 2007, Ross Neilsen had an epiphany. He quit his job, left his relationship, moved out of his house and into his car. Neilsen spent the next two years couch surfing and began the never ending tour schedule that he would become known for throughout Canada. The road honed his craft into a well-oiled machine of stories and song. Music has taken Ross throughout Canada, Mexico, The Olympics, The Pan Am Games, The Hill Country region of Mississippi, The Swampy rivers of Louisiana and even to Macon, Georgia where he was privileged to play the holy grail of blues, rock and soul: Duane Allman’s 1957 Les Paul Gold Top. 2014 found Ross Studying at Camp Copperhead under the tutelage of Steve Earle. The time at Camp Copperhead proved invaluable and gave Ross an entirely new approach to songwriting.

The Pocket Players is a blues band from Aarhus, Denmark, consisting of known veterans. The band's absolute focal point and cornerstone is Ole Bech, who with a rare energy and empathy sings and plays "The Blues" - every time. Very raw, with huge honesty and incredibly beautiful. The Pocket Players arose because the four musicians, who know each other from before through the Danish blues scene, wanted to play the blues at its best, namely traditional but without any rules so that fun and personal musicality will be given a central role, both during recording sessions and live concerts.

Perhaps you wonder why the band is named "The Pocket Players"? But no, it has nothing to do with pocket billiards or other sultry interpretations. Being a "pocket player" or "playing in the pocket" is a term derived from the blues environment in the South. A pocket player has a solid groove and holds on to it with all he's got. When an entire band is "in the pocket", it means that all spirits are together and play music solidly built on a strong foundation of secure grooves. And that is exactly what The Pocket Players do.

Personnel: Ole Bech (guitar, vockals), Palle Hjort (organ), Søren Poulsen (drums), Henrik Poulsen (bass).

"Throw Your Dog A Bone" is the latest release from Danish blues band The Pocket Players, who by now has 4 years in the business. Their music is described as "classical blues without rules, but with fabulous musicians and heaps of energy". The album consists of self-composed songs about love, jealousy, alcohol, sex and lust for life. The album also contains sharp comments to Denmark and the state of the Western World in the year 2016.

The Pocket Players' sound is raw and unpolished. The band follows a proud old blues tradition of stealing with arms and legs and stir it all together in a gumbo. The result is blues with a dash of acid rock. A quite unique and different expression than the blues derived from the Mississippi Delta, Muddy Waters' Chicago or Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas.

Since first setting foot in a recording studio 15 years ago, Erja Lyytinen has become a bona fide star in her homeland and a celebrated fixture on the international music scene. She has recorded nine studio albums in locations as diverse as Helsinki, Memphis and Clarksdale, Mississippi, earning numerous awards and honors along the way. Lyytinen is equally at home in traditional and modern blues and has never been afraid to incorporate styles like jazz, pop and soul. Even motherhood hasn’t slowed her down: Her 2014 Elmore James tribute album "The Sky Is Crying" – recorded shortly before she gave birth to twins – was universally hailed as her best and bluesiest to date. “Erja has seemingly achieved the impossible by both sounding like Elmore as he played in the 1950’s whilst adding her unique flair and 21st century vista,” wrote Blues In Britain in a glowing review.

Heikki Silvennoinen is a guitarist and songwriter from Tampere, Finland. He has played in several well known bands since mid-70's, most notably Tabula Rasa, Catwalk and Q.Stone. He has also released several solo albums. Ironically, Silvennoinen did not gain nationwide fame until early 90's when he started to act and write sketches to Kummeli, a massively popular TV sketch show in Finland.

As a young teen he sang in the choir, and then joined the Jubilee Hummingbirds. At age 16, Jackson was drumming with bluesman R. L. Burnside. Burnside's daughter Linda had Jackson's son 1978, Cedric Burnside, and they would later marry. Jackson appeared in recordings of Burnside's band, sometimes called The Sound Machine, starting in 1979. Beside the traditional influence, David Evans credited him with bringing in the modern funk, RnB and soul influences of the band. Later Jackson appeared on record with Junior Kimbrough (including in the cult documentary, Deep Blues), Jessie Mae Hemphill, CeDell Davis, R. L. Boyce and Markus James He performed live with Lightnin' Malcolm, Sean "Bad" Apple, and Little Joe Ayers.

In the mid 1990s he moved to the Netherlands to continue his musical career His son Cedric would take his place at Burnside's drums. In 1999 he released the only album under his own name, Calvin Jackson & Mississippi Bound's Goin' Down South.

Aaron West - 2 albums: 504 Soul / The Trans-Tasman Quartet

Raised in country New South Wales, Australia, Aaron began playing guitar at age 10 after being inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was influenced by his father’s record collection, especially by great blues musicians like BB King, Buddy Guy, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed and Howlin’ Wolf. He began playing music professionally during high school. After high school he was accepted into the Conservatorium of Music on both jazz guitar and jazz vocals, where he studied music theory for twelve months before leaving to take up a short-term teaching position. He has made a living from music ever since – playing thousands of gigs throughout the world, studio session work, singing jingles for TV and radio, writing and arranging etc.

He has had the privilege of meeting, playing, recording, studying, and living with some of the world’s best musicians and singers. He has appeared on most major Australian television networks. His original songs have received airplay both in Australia and overseas. After years of being a sideman musician – playing other people’s music – Aaron has started leading his own band, where he can play the music that excites him; the legendary African-American styles of Soul, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Gospel, R&B etc. and especially the music of New Orleans.

Tensfield is a distinctive bluesband from Leuven. With the refreshing and energetic music on their debut Freeze The Clock, the band writes a new page in the history of the blues. Freeze The Clock dwells on our society and on the pressure we all experience, one way or another. It is an album that talks about time, confusion and how we experience the events around us. The lyrics focus on universal themes, there is always a part someone can relate to. Singer and guitarist Raffe Claes writes most of the songs, but Koen Geudens (keys) and Geert Zonderman (bass) have also contributed to this album. The writing process usually begins with one of them initiating a song, after which they finish it together. This process is very important to all four of them. Tensfield starts with blues and then gives a new dimension to the classic chord schemes. That is how they create a new sound without denying their love for the blues. But there is more than the blues: the band shares years of experience in jazz, rock and funk. All these different styles filter through their music and give it an extra dimension.

Tensfield recorded Freeze The Clock at Studio Fandango with Dirk Lekenne, a great experience. “As a musician, you put a lot of energy in your instrument, in writing and getting ready for gigs,” says Raffe Claes. “But recording your own music in a studio is the ultimate challenge. And after that, it is a wonderful feeling to share your songs with the world.”

In 2016, Tensfield participated in the Belgian Blues Challenge. Some comments: “The revelation of the contest, warmly welcomed by everyone.” “Drummer Jurgen Moelans and bass player Geert Zonderman form a solid rythm section for Koen Geudens’ beautiful keys and the elegant guitar sound of singer Raffe Claes.”

Pianist Albert Ammons was the king of boogie-woogie, a bluesy jazz style that swept the United States---and then the world---from the late 1930s into the mid-1940s. Although his origins were modest, his powerful piano style would take him from Chicago barrooms to Carnegie Hall to the White House. As a soloist and in duets, Ammons's propulsive style gave life to classics like "Boogie Woogie Stomp" and "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie." "Albert Ammons was one of the big three of late-'30s boogie-woogie, along with Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis."

Core instrumental music and themes have always fascinated and influenced his traditional song writing, particularly lead by bands such as The Dixie Dregs and The Hellecasters. Apart from great song writing, their songs were – more importantly - purely instrumentally and virtuously arranged.
