Old Man Kelly, born Liam Patrick Kelly, is an American roots musician based in Blacksburg, Virginia, in the Appalachian Mountains. His music draws from the early days of American roots traditions — blues, swing, and troubadour styles — creating original songs that feel familiar but encourage listeners to explore their geographic and historical roots.
Kelly grew up in a military family, moving frequently as a child. This nomadic upbringing meant he had to quickly adapt to new communities, learning local dialects, customs, and music. These experiences shaped his deep connection to place and tradition.
Kelly began learning music from various regions, immersing himself in old-time mountain string band traditions of Southwest Virginia. He mastered instruments such as fiddle, banjo, upright bass, and pedal steel guitar, even winning ribbons at fiddlers’ conventions. He also learned square dancing and became a square dance caller, embedding himself in Appalachian culture.
LP Kelly has made hundreds of public appearances at bars, festivals, swing dances, square dances, radio shows, and house concerts, promoting music with both history and a future. He views old-time music as something “borrowed” that must be “given back” to its geographic origins.
