The Yardbirds - The Clapton And Beck Years (2 CD)

As befits its title, this double album of classic Yardbirds material covers the Clapton and and Beck years on the respective discs. Those well-known names are accompanied by ever-presents Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar/bass) and Jim McCarty, who served from the band's 1963 beginnings to the split five years later. The other original Yardbird, vocalist Keith Relf, was electrocuted in 1976, while original bassist Paul Samwell-Smith became a record producer - Beverly Craven and Cat Stevens just two of his successes.

Eric Clapton replaced the band's first - and only unknown - guitarist, Top Topham, just in time to feature on their debut LP "Five Live Yardbirds", cut at London's Marquee Club in 1964. Compromising ten US blues numbers from the likes of Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley given a high-energy treatment, it's been acclaimed as one of the all-time classic concert albums and is present here in its entirety as tracks 7 to 16 of CD one.

In 1965, Clapton quit for the purist blues of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and Jeff Beck from the little-known London band Tridents arrived as his replacement. The hit singles he appeared on like "Heart Full Of Soul", the Eastern tinged "Still I'm Sad" and "Shapes Of Things" were classics of their kind and remain ageless staples of rock radio to this day. These three titles and their respective B-sides lead of our second disc, and are accompanied by such further collectable Yardbirds tracks as "The Train Kept A Rollin" from the cult movie Blow Up that also features Jimmy Page (the film showed him on bass, though he actually played guitar). /Excerpt from the liner notes by Michael Heatley

In his remarkable 47-year career, Little Mack Simmons — Chicago vocalist and harpman extraordinaire — has performed with the some of the brightest lights of the blues world, including Robert Nighthawk, Sunnyland Slim, Eddie Boyd, Willie Mabon, Detroit Junior, Jimmy Dawkins, Lonnie Brooks, Luther Allison, Magic Sam, J.B. Lenoir and Howlin' Wolf.

Malcolm Simmons was born on January 25, 1933, in the small cotton-farming community of Twist, Arkansas. He was a childhood friend of James Cotton, who was serving as an apprentice of Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller) at the time. The two boys persisted in skipping school together for the more enticing lure of jamming on their harmonicas, and Cotton taught Simmons the harp techniques he was learning from the master.

It was his 1997 Electro-Fi release, Little Mack Is Back, that proclaimed the revival of Simmons's career, reaping enthusiastic reviews from around the globe. Recorded in Canada with 'Toronto's finest players'. Nice recording, good band, and well-balanced mixture of classics and originals. The Chicago harp player loves to blow, and it shows. Recommended.

Gospel and rhythm & blues have long been close siblings even if they don't always acknowledge each other in public -- many early R&B hits were essentially secularized versions of classic sacred numbers, and dozens of soul stars got their start singing with gospel groups -- so it certainly makes sense that the soul revivalists at Daptone Recordings would open their arms to the talents of Naomi Shelton, who has sung both Saturday night and Sunday morning music over the course of her career that's spanned six decades. Shelton's second album for Daptone, Cold World, mixes elements of traditional gospel with '60s-influenced soul, and while there's less of a churchy feel to this album than 2009's What Have You Done, My Brother?, it certainly fits in with the mindset of acts like Curtis Mayfield and the Staple Singers, who weren't afraid to add some Christian-leaning commentary to their music. "Sinner," "Heaven Is Mine," "Humble Me," and the title track all have the slinky feel of vintage soul (Shelton's longtime musical director Cliff Driver and Daptone chief Gabriel Roth, the latter of whom wrote six of the album's 12 numbers, have helped give this music a groove that's authentic yet unforced), while Shelton's voice -- compassionate and muscular, with just a hint of sass -- has both the power and the emotional heft to bring these tunes to life, not so much preaching as offering her audience advice about life lessons she learned the hard way. Shelton's style makes a virtue of her maturity while showing off an energy and passion one would expect from a much younger woman; Cold World is an example of what Daptone and the retro-soul crowd are doing right, and it's an authoritative and affecting piece of work. ~Mark Deming

John "Gus" Angus: guitar / vocals / blues harp; Padraig Tansey: drums / percussion; Tim Hopkins: bass / vocals; Andy Cotton: guitar. The John Angus Blue Band performs original bluesy rock songs.

I have been talking for too long about recording an original blues album and now have finally made the decision that it is about time. John Angus has always been a guitar player and viewed his vocal ability as OK. somehow this was good enough to get him into some top perforning Led zep tribute bands as the Robert Plant and on two occasions as the Page and Plant.... despite being a Wishbone Ash and Kossoff fan. John has fronted "Preacher" on guitar and vocals, a blues rock band covering Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter and numerous blues rock outfits and performed at the major blues festivals and venues across the years. It was time however to call time on the power trio and create a new line up to record and perform his original songs. The band are now in studio and aim to gig this at the major festivals in 2017 and support the named artistes at major venues. John has already supported, Aynsley Lister and Ian Parker and with his current original rock band No Favors Wishbone Ash.

Essentially, An Introduction to Junior Wells is an abbreviated version of the Fuel 2000 release Calling All Blues. This material predates Hoodoo Man Blues, the landmark 1965 electric Chicago blues album on Delmark with tunes recorded between 1957 and 1961. Of the 14 cuts, nine were originally issued on Chief, with one track, "Little by Little," released on Profile. The remaining bonus tracks are unspecified live versions of "Help Me," "Look Over Yonder," "Messin' with the Kid," and "I Can't Help Myself." All of this material is rock-solid and should definitely exist in your collection between Blues Hit Big Town and Hoodoo Man Blues. ~Al Campbell

The Domestic Bumblebees - 2 albums: Crying For More / Break Up Bop

Daniel Kordelius: Guitar and lead vocals; Johan Svensson: Drums and backing vocals; Tobias Einestad: Double bass, guitar and backing vocals.

The Domestic Bumblebees is a fifties style Blues/rock’n’roll trio from Stockholm, Sweden, well known for their explosive, collar-soaking shows and diabolic instrument skills. The band was formed at a small club called “Jumpin’ The Cellar” in November 2004 by three members from the mighty fine Rhythm & Blues band Danny & The Cappers. It was supposed to be one gig only but the audience went crazy and the guys had so much fun that they decided to keep on buzzin’.

This is what Chicago blues used to sound like back in the old days. Barrelhouse Chuck should get lots more credit than he gets for his fine work! Who else does what he does? He never over plays. His playing is so lowdown and blue. I love your voice and the songs you write! Thanks for staying true to the music. Buy this to hear the way blues piano should sound like! ~ Lee Thomas

Joon Wolfsberg (born March 8, 1992 in Cologne, Germany) is a Singer-Songwriter from Germany and best known as the lead vocalist, songwriter, and name giver of the band "Joon Wolfsberg“. She was introduced to music at the age of 6, taking piano, drums and singing lessons at the public music school Erfurt in Germany. At the age of 15 she taught herself how to play the guitar. After high school in 2010 she completely dedicated herself to music. At this time she already performed her own songs on the street as a street musician.

In 2007 with the age of 15 she began to write her own songs. In 2008 Joon Wolfsberg composed a song for a project from the singer Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, at this time she still worked under the artist name "Joon W.“ Since 2010 she writes all her songs together with her dad Joe Wolfsberg (who also is the producer of all the records she made). In January 2011 she recorded her debut album "Made In USA“ in the Tracking Room Studios in Nashville together with Dave Roe (last bass player of Johnny Cash), Buddy Hyatt (piano player at Toto), Shawn Fichter (drummer of Peter Frampton), Smith Curry (guitar player of Kid Rock) and Bobby Terry (Guitar Player for Amy Grant). The record "Made In USA“ was released on April 1st 2011 as digital version and on May 14th 2011 as physical copy. The album got a lot attention and was also shared in the music scene of Los Angeles. In this way the connection to the band members of Blind Melon, Brad Smith (Bass) and Christopher Thorn (guitar) and Dave Krusen (first drummer of Pearl Jam) took place. With them she recorded her second album "Wonderland“.

The Financial Times Germany elected the Wonderland Album to be the album of the week on June 3rd 2012 and gave it 5 out of 5 points. In the end of 2012 Joon Wolfsberg founded her first band in Germany. In 2013 she recorded the third album "Revolujoon“ and in 2014 the fourth album "The Deluxe Underdog“ together with her new band members Toni Funk (guitar) and Michael Nowatzky (drums) in a german recording studio.

When Five Horse Johnson formed back in 1995, referring to themselves as a blues band, a few brows might well have been furrowed. But this is a band that has always understood that the blues isn't a formula - it's a way of looking at the world. Their take on the blooze is as a dirty, sensual thing, enhanced with a healthy dose of humor. From the slow, bluesy stomp of the title-track, to the dirge vibe of Daddy Was a Gun - a story of some weird goings-on in a strange parish - Jake Leg Boogie is pure old school FHJ, recorded live, everyone in the same room, with as little overdubbing as possible.

Accordingly, it feels lively and loud in the MC5-come-Hendrix vibe of Hard Times, the hard-rocking Magic Man (a tale of depravity set in the town of Springfield, MO), and the near-Texan boogie of Smoke Show. Jake Leg Boogie was recorded at Rustbelt Studios, with longtime producer Al Sutton (Big Chief, Novadriver, Halfway to Gone, Detroit Cobras) at the production helm, with a definitive nod to Dave Cobb (All Them Witches, Rival Sons). Artwork provided by noted graphic artist and FHJ-collaborator Mark Dancey, keeping with a tradition established on 1999's Fat Black Pussycat.

Five Horse Johnson is not a band that makes apologies, and compromise is not an option. The truth is, this is hard, heavy, dirty blues rock 'n' roll for people who like the sound of an engine roaring or the feeling obtained by following a cold beer with a shot of good whiskey. FHJ will gladly kick your ***, and then wait for you to say thank you and ask for another. Which you will. /Amazon

The most popular exponent of the classic New Orleans R&B sound, Fats Domino sold more records than any other black rock & roll star of the 1950s. His relaxed, lolling boogie-woogie piano style and easygoing, warm vocals anchored a long series of national hits from the mid-'50s to the early '60s. Through it all, his basic approach rarely changed. He may not have been one of early rock's most charismatic, innovative, or threatening figures, but he was certainly one of its most consistent.

Domino's first single, "The Fat Man" (1949), is one of the dozens of tracks that have been consistently singled out as a candidate for the first rock & roll record. As far as Fats was concerned, he was just playing what he'd already been doing in New Orleans for years, and would continue to play and sing in pretty much the same fashion even after his music was dubbed "rock & roll."

The record made number two on the R&B charts, and sold a million copies. Just as important, it established a vital partnership between Fats and Imperial A&R man Dave Bartholomew. Bartholomew, himself a trumpeter, would produce Domino's big hits, co-writing many of them with Fats. He would also usually employ New Orleans session greats like Alvin Tyler on sax and Earl Palmer on drums -- musicians who were vital in establishing New Orleans R&B as a distinct entity, playing on many other local recordings as well (including hits made in New Orleans by Georgia native Little Richard).

Domino didn't cross over into the pop charts in a big way until 1955, when "Ain't That a Shame" made the Top Ten. Pat Boone's cover of the song stole some of Fats' thunder, going all the way to number one (Boone was also bowdlerizing Little Richard's early singles for pop hits during this time). Domino's long-range prospects weren't damaged, however; between 1955 and 1963, he racked up an astonishing 35 Top 40 singles. "Blueberry Hill" (1956) was probably his best (and best-remembered) single; "Walking to New Orleans," "Whole Lotta Loving," "I'm Walking," "Blue Monday," and "I'm in Love Again" were also huge successes.

After Fats left Imperial for ABC-Paramount in 1963, he would only enter the Top 40 one more time. The surprise was not that Fats fell out of fashion, but that he'd maintained his popularity so long while the essentials of his style remained unchanged. This was during an era, remember, when most of rock's biggest stars had their careers derailed by death or scandal, or were made to soften up their sound for mainstream consumption. Although an active performer in the ensuing decades, his career as an important artist was essentially over in the mid-'60s. He did stir up a bit of attention in 1968 when he covered the Beatles' "Lady Madonna" single, which had been an obvious homage to Fats' style. ~ Richie Unterberger

Big O & the Blue Quarters has gradually hit its name firmly on the Danish blues scene, as a band in constant development, and has already played a lot of concerts at venues, festivals and for private events throughout the country.

Examples include: Horsens Blues Festival, Randers City Blues Festival, The Blue Festival, Aarhus Festuge, Finger Eskil, The Swing, Wonderland, Kulisselageret, HNT and many more. The band is based on Westcoast and Chicago blues and master the swinging "Jump "Blues in a way that makes it hard to sit still. As the band develops, they also move into more modern and experimental blues, and have gradually found their very own unique sound.

The Big O & The Blue Quarters own material is increasingly filling in the repertoire, but they also give their energetic bids to old classics. The band's ability to let things develop on stage has thrilled the audience wherever they have performed and they have managed to convert even the most stubborn blues skeptics.

In addition to playing own compositions, the band offers songs from legends such as T-Bone Walker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Little Walter and many more.

Good-time band, Mungo Jerry struck it big in the early 1970s with one of the classic summer hits, In The Summertime. Noted for their rhythmic approach shaped by old jug bands and skiffle music, they were formed by Ray Dorset and Colin Earl - both previously members of another group, The Good Earth - who recruited Paul King and Mike Cole and in 1970 formed Mungo Jerry, taking their name from T.S Eliot's poem Mungojerrie And Rumpelteazer. The irresistible In The Summertime was their first single, topping the charts in 26 countries and going on to sell 30 million copies. Mike Cole was soon replaced by John Godfrey on bass as they followed it with two more big summery hits, Baby Jump and Lady Rose. Instantly recognisable with his fuzzy hair and raspy voice, Ray Dorset was the unquestioned star of the band and, feeling restricted by their simplistic good-time format, he released a far more serious solo album Cold Blue Excursion in 1972. With dissension in the ranks, King and Earl left - going on to form King Earl Boogie Band - while Dorset and Godfrey continued to score Mungo Jerry hits with new members. In 1983 Dorset formed a blues group Katmandu with Peter Green and Vincent Crane, but intermittently revived Mungo Jerry, whose profile rose again when reggae singer Shaggy had a hit with a revival of In The Summertime. They continued to remain popular at European blues and jazz festivals and in 2012 released a new album, Cool Jesus.

Half Deaf Clatch - CrowSoul

01. Crowsoul (20:33)
02. Crowsoul, Pt. II (24:03)

"Releasing an album made up of just two songs could be seen as a very brave, or stupid thing to do nowadays..."

Thus spake the opening line to the press release for 'CrowSoul' by Half Deaf Clatch.

Very brave? Certainly. Stupid? Certainly not.

CrowSoul comprises two songs: Emissary, and The Reaping, each of which run for over twenty minutes.

Emissary is the first song, and opens the album with a delicate guitar instrumental that offers a Mississippi Delta Blues-esque thumb-picked bass line, coupled with delicate finger-picking and soaring slide guitar notes, married with a Spanish Flamenco feel and delivered at the tempo of a theme to a Spaghetti Western movie.

Trying to provide a written description of this unique music doesn't do justice to the sublime result of this apparent fusion of styles. This listener was hooked from the first note, and carried along for two blissful minutes.

And then, just when you think it can't get any better than this, Clatch begins to sing.

His voice is a force of nature. Blind Willie Johnson meets Charley Patton, opening the narrative of a biblical, apocalyptic tale of The CrowSoul arriving on earth to claim the souls of the sinful, the greedy, and the just plain bad.

The Reaping opens with the tolling of a bell behind a sombre slide guitar intro, the tone of which hints at the darkness of what is to come.

Clatch's superior musicianship and growling delivery is a match made in...well, maybe not heaven, but somewhere where the cool people live.

These are songs that will never make the mainstream charts - and that's a good thing because when the CrowSoul comes down, Clatch and his followers, and all who are like him will be the ones left behind to spread the word of great music born in dark places of the imagination, and performed from the heart.

An album comprising just two songs?

That is very brave. But not stupid. Not stupid at all.

Really bloody good ~Richard Wall

ADDICTED TO TROUBLE is called Dr. Will's new and hitherto most rocking work. It's about driving, drinking too much, of course women, touring life, sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll, lots of fun and of course anger. DR. WILL means what he says. Rock 'n' Roll. No keyboards, no wind instruments. Just electric guitars, rough riffs, hard drums and girls in the back. On his new album, Dr. Will wants to play all the drums himself, and he also plays a Cereal Box Guitar, a three-time unicum, for Doctor's Orders and Time Is Tight. From all this, the Doc cooks his spells of rock, roots, blues, soul and a strong portion of crackedness. Earthy and raised. A shot of Rolling Stones, a pinch of Seasick Steve, a spoon of Chuck Berry, a knife tip Jon Spencer, and a giant dredge full of humor.

A man like a steam engine. And a band like a Tarantino movie. The whole appearance: a natural force. Somewhere between Vaudeville and Titty Twister. A little bit sleazy and quite oblique!

The mighty Dr. Will with his shaman voice is one of the greatest blues players entertainers in European countries. With cylinder and feather decoration the most populous bird of the scene. And a great composer and lyricist. After his last album "Cuffs Off" with the price of the German record critics award was awarded to Dr. Will now with his massive new work "Addicted To Trouble "on tour.

To be heard there is Dr. Wills' own magic water from a rich dose New Orleans-Blues, a portion of Roots with a heaped tablespoon of rock and one Giant dredge full of humor. There is a cracking voodoo groove show with the Voodoo doctor himself as a frontman at the stand-up drums. He is supported from the Wizards, a hell of a good band between double bass madness, banjo ecstasy and divine guitar sounds - and all this completely acoustic - so unplugged! And, of course, all the audience patrons will be healed and the evil spirits will be cured the devil hunted. You Need To See To Believe!

Chris Belleau - 2 albums: Swamp Fever / Knee Deep In The Blues

West of New Orleans, east of Lafayette and south of Shreveport lies Baton Rouge, a city that thinks it's still a small town on the Mississippi river. Home of the swamp blues sound, my home town. Music has always tugged at my soul, I remember hearing brass bands as a child. Jazz bands that blew funky blues on the street. I've always loved the sound of the accordian...cajun accordian, what a sound! Rock and roll, jazz, blues and country; it's all served up on the same plate down here in Louisiana.

I started playing music as a child, I chose the trombone, or maybe it chose me. I picked up other instruments later as a teenager including the guitar, harmonica, piano and accordian. Somewhere along the way music swept me away like a flood; I'm still trying to keep my head above the water.

Larry Williams (1935-1980) was a popular rock & roll singer who in the 1950s had such hits as “Dizzy, Miss Lizzy,” “Bony Maroney,” “Short Fat Fannie,” “Bad Boy,” and “She Said Yeah.”

Born in New Orleans, Williams learned piano and developed his singing style. After his family moved to Oakland, he became a member of the Lemon Drops, a local R&B group. In 1954 when he was 19, Williams visited New Orleans and met Lloyd Price, who was recording for the Specialty label. Price hired him as his valet, introduced him to the label’s producer Robert “Bumps” Blackwell, and, after an audition, he was signed to a record contract.

Larry Williams’s first recording, “Just Because,” was a hit and his career took off for a time. Groomed as Specialty’s replacement for the recently departed Little Richard, Williams recorded a wide variety of rock ’n’ roll and ballads for Specialty during 1957-1959. Larry Williams’s popularity had begun to slip before he was arrested in 1959 for selling narcotics. Dropped by Specialty, he recorded for Chess and other labels with only mixed success. He worked a bit with Johnny “Guitar” Watson in the mid-1960s and had solid selling-records with “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and “Nobody.” After largely dropping out of music for a decade, Larry Williams was beginning to make a comeback when he died of a gunshot wound in 1980 under mysterious circumstances.

The Ale Ravanello Blues Combo quartet releases their third album, "Alley Cat". The album features 10 songs, with a great difference in sound, exploring the texture of the acoustic double bass and some themes where the harmonic is captured in a natural way, without the characteristic vintage amplification.

Since 2008 Ale Ravanello Blues Combo is a quartet that focuses on traditional Blues, mixing Little Walter, Big Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, Magic Sam, Guitar Slim and Pee Wee Crayton influences with original feeling dating back to 1950′s classic swing.

Harmonica player and charismatic lead singer, Ale Ravanello spearheads the talented quartet, featuring Clark Carballo on drums, Sergio Selbach on bass and Nicola Spolidoro on guitar. Performing in major music festivals around Brazil, Ale Ravanello Blues Combo has had the opportunity to perform beside Blues masters like Bob Stroger, Billy Branch and Carlos Johnson, and has been chosen to open one of Kim Wilson’s Blues All-Star shows.

Guitar player Nicola Spolidoro is an award-winning jazz musician that adds a unique chord to the group. Energy and sharpness define Clark Carballo’s solid drum grooves. Judged in the top 5 Brazilian Blues bass players, Sérgio Selbach has been chosen repeatedly to back-up international Blues bands on tour in Southern Brazil including Phil Guy, Magic Slim, Curtis Salgado, Kenny Neal, Donnie Nichilo, Guy King and Andy Just. Their first album, “Live At Mr. Jones” was recorded live in 2009 on tour in Argentina and released later that year at the Buenos Aires Blues Festival.

After two years of a busy schedule, the group is tight and reaching solid arrangements for Ale Ravanello’s originals, which has lead them to record their second album, “Haunted”, which focuses on original material. Released in December 2011, “Haunted” has been well received by critics and is the only Blues album to get nominated for “2011 Best CD Açorianos Award” in a category that includes all genres.

Larry was brought up in the inner city of Cincinnati, Ohio by a single parent along with nine other siblings. The dilapidated three tiered tenement literally shook with the radio and vinyl record sounds of everything from blues, gospel, and soul, to jazz. It was in this fertile, eclectic musical environment that 9 year old Larry first picked up a pen and copied the lyrics of Willie Dixon, Bob Dylan, Laura Nero, Billy Strayhorn and countless others. Larry marveled at these wonderful storytellers and it eventually led him to write his own stories.

Two brothers returning from the military armed with funds from the GI Bill allowed the Griffith family to upgrade to the Walnut Hills section of Cincinnati, which housed the legendary King Records. Seeing great artists in the neighborhood like Freddie King, Bill Doggett, Hank Ballard, Ivory Joe Hunter and even the Godfather of Soul himself James Brown was an ordinary occurrence. As a matter of fact it was Wesley Hargrove of Hank Ballard’s Midnighters who first took 16 year old Larry into Federal Records recording studio to drum on several demos. This led to stints as a session drummer, weekend touring and a bird’s eyes view of the not so pretty side of the business all while still in his teens. Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys had a profound effect on Larry because of the way Jimi married sonic sounds with futuristic, introspective lyrics. It was also around this time that he fell in lifelong love with the lyrical phasing of John Coltrane.

Relocating to Atlanta, Georgia in the 1990s, Larry discovered then quickly became immersed in the thriving Atlanta blues scene. It was here he had finally found a musical genre wide enough to accommodate his eclectic tastes. Still, it wasn’t until the early 2000’s that “the dream” turned everything on its ear. While staying at a backwoods motel in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Larry who previously had no designs on or inclinations toward guitar experienced the same dream three nights in a row. In “the dream”, he was onstage ripping it up on guitar like a man possessed, working the deep delta juke joint crowd into a sweet, sweaty frenzy. Fully awakened, Larry came back to Atlanta and told his friend and bandmate, Chicago Joe Jones of his strange dream. It was Joe who then gave Larry his first guitar, a no-name something or other that he had found at a garage sale for a $1. From these humble beginnings and equipped with the visual of the Mississippi delta dream, Larry strapped on, plugged in, turned up and began chipping away.

Ron Spielman has been highly regarded for decades by those in the know for his guitar playing and excellent songwriting. With his new sidekicks Uwe Breunig and Joh Weisgerber (both of The Ruffcats) and Werner Goldbach he’s brought himself into bad company. 'Spielman In Bad Company' fortunately for us! Because in the bleak alleys of the morbid music industry the four country boys cook up a mean stew of music: The soul of the blues apparently survived the apocalypse and shines here in full splendor, spiced with noisy elements from the worlds of electronic and hip hop and everything else picked up along the way. Quirky and full of respect for the old masters of the genre, the quartet has redefined this tradition-steeped music. Because with all the hard-earned life-experience they’ve accumulated they hammer a completely new pulse into the blues in countless jams. Undisguised, gripping — let’s call it neoblues.

'Sweet Songs for the Dying' emerged through collective work and through the creative process. Again and again the musicians met each other for jam sessions, to feel out moods and atmospheres and to grasp them. „Our main concern was taking these moods and collectively developing them into finished pieces,“ says Ron Spielman. The material was collected, enriched, thrown away or developed further. Finally 'Sweet Songs for the Dying' was recorded live in the studio. With time it became clear to us that something special was arising, a fully new interpretation of an old style.

He only had a few hits in the 1950s and early '60s, but as Bo Diddley sang, "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover." You can't judge an artist by his chart success, either, and Diddley produced greater and more influential music than all but a handful of the best early rockers. The Bo Diddley beat -- bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp -- is one of rock & roll's bedrock rhythms, showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, and even pop-garage knock-offs like the Strangeloves' 1965 hit "I Want Candy." Diddley's hypnotic rhythmic attack and declamatory, boasting vocals stretched back as far as Africa for their roots, and looked as far into the future as rap. His trademark otherworldly vibrating, fuzzy guitar style did much to expand the instrument's power and range. But even more important, Bo's bounce was fun and irresistibly rocking, with a wisecracking, jiving tone that epitomized rock & roll at its most humorously outlandish and freewheeling.

Before taking up blues and R&B, Diddley had studied classical violin, but shifted gears after hearing John Lee Hooker. In the early '50s, he began playing with his longtime partner, maraca player Jerome Green, to get what Bo's called "that freight train sound." Billy Boy Arnold, a fine blues harmonica player and singer in his own right, was also playing with Diddley when the guitarist got a deal with Chess in the mid-'50s (after being turned down by rival Chicago label Vee-Jay). His very first single, "Bo Diddley"/"I'm a Man" (1955), was a double-sided monster. The A-side was soaked with futuristic waves of tremolo guitar, set to an ageless nursery rhyme; the flip was a bump-and-grind, harmonica-driven shuffle, based around a devastating blues riff. But the result was not exactly blues, or even straight R&B, but a new kind of guitar-based rock & roll, soaked in the blues and R&B, but owing allegiance to neither.

Diddley was never a top seller on the order of his Chess rival Chuck Berry, but over the next half-dozen or so years, he produced a catalog of classics that rival Berry's in quality. "You Don't Love Me," "Diddley Daddy," "Pretty Thing," "Diddy Wah Diddy," "Who Do You Love?," "Mona," "Road Runner," "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover" -- all are stone-cold standards of early, riff-driven rock & roll at its funkiest. Oddly enough, his only Top 20 pop hit was an atypical, absurd back-and-forth rap between him and Jerome Green, "Say Man," that came about almost by accident as the pair were fooling around in the studio.

As a live performer, Diddley was galvanizing, using his trademark square guitars and distorted amplification to produce new sounds that anticipated the innovations of '60s guitarists like Jimi Hendrix. In Great Britain, he was revered as a giant on the order of Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. The Rolling Stones in particular borrowed a lot from Bo's rhythms and attitude in their early days, although they only officially covered a couple of his tunes, "Mona" and "I'm Alright." Other British R&B groups like the Yardbirds, Animals, and Pretty Things also covered Diddley standards in their early days. Buddy Holly covered "Bo Diddley" and used a modified Bo Diddley beat on "Not Fade Away"; when the Stones gave the song the full-on Bo treatment (complete with shaking maracas), the result was their first big British hit.

The British Invasion helped increase the public's awareness of Diddley's importance, and ever since then he's been a popular live act. Sadly, though, his career as a recording artist -- in commercial and artistic terms -- was over by the time the Beatles and Stones hit America. He would record with ongoing and declining frequency, but after 1963, he never wrote or recorded original material on par with his early classics. Whether he'd spent his muse, or just felt he could coast on his laurels, is hard to say. But he remains a vital part of the collective rock & roll consciousness, and occasionally reached wider visibility via a 1979 tour with the Clash, a cameo role in the film Trading Places, a late-'80s tour with Ronnie Wood, and a 1989 television commercial for sports shoes with star athlete Bo Jackson. /Biography by Richie Unterberger, AllMusic
