Thomas, whose career goes back to the days of the Rabbit Foot Minstrels, made some brilliant novelty cuts for Stax in the 1970s. Introduced to the guitar at 10 years old, Sean Chambers found his calling and the blues along with Rock n' Roll became his life. Feeling his music was his approach as he shunned music lessons and was self-taught taking his lead from the sounds of the Jimi Hendrix catalogue. His talent showed through quickly and by 19 he was opening for the likes of B. B. King, Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Johnny Winter. Ten Til Midnight is Sean's third release after Strong Temptation (1998) and Humble Spirits (2005), but he wanted this to diverge from his other music, he was looking to depict the feeling of a live session with the band playing as if they were at a gig. From the opening riff he succeeded in projecting a live free flowing sound. Sean wrote 7 of the 10 tracks allowing for only 3 band favorite covers to be included (Brown Sugar, All The Kings Horses, and You're Gonna Miss Me).

The release opens with the title track Ten Til Midnight that blazes from the opening riff and only cools down to pass the sound to the next track. Sean's guitar work, praised as being one of the top 50 Blues guitarists of all time, is not about energy, though he has enough of that, or about speed, it is about rendering a sound that engages the listener and complements the band members and his vocals, which are raw and evocative of the music. The track Blues and Rock 'n' Roll is driven by a combination of Sean's guitar and vocals and Gary Keith's scintillating harmonica. True to the title, this is a captivating meld of blues and Rock n' Roll that pays homage to the music that bore Sean Chambers. The cover track All The Kings Horses (Luther Allison) was one of Sean's all-time favorite songs, and his rendering is as powerful and pointed as that of Luther's live gigs.

Other tracks include You're Gonna Miss Me, a fiery blues track that kicks in from the opening note; In The Winter Time is down and dirty blues with sizzling guitar work and engaging vocals "In the winter time my baby, she keeps me warm;" Make It Go, a rollicking hard-driving track that captures the musicianship of the band; the cover Brown Sugar (Bill Gibbons) feels like the band is blowing off steam as they stretch their blues and rock legs to achieve a powerful adaptation; When I Get Lonely was written while the band was on the road and was penned in a hotel room and has become a Sean Chambers standard; and the release closes with the track I Don't Know Why a number where the guitar riffs are toned down and the harmonica takes center stage to ride Sean's compelling vocals "..she left me, she left me, and I don't know why, I know she's leaving, she'll stay for good, and I will be here lonely like a good man never should."

Rae Gordon’s debut album “Blue Lemonade” landed in the top ten on the Billboard Blues Chart in 2013. She followed-up with “Dirty Flowers” in 2016. In January of 2017 “Rae Gordon & the Backseat Drivers” finished third in the band competition at the International Blues Challenge. Gordon’s last recording “Better Than I Was”, released later that year won Portland’s Cascade Blues Association’s Muddy Award for both “Best Northwest Recording” and “Best Contempoary Blues Act”. Gordon was also named the CBA’s “Best Female Vocalist” five times.

Born in Hernando, Mississippi, Wee Willie Walker’s career spanned six decades as he was one of the last real soul singers. He recorded nine sides for the Memphis based Goldwax label in 1968. More recently, between 2004 and 2011, Walker recorded three albums with the Minneapolis based blues band, The Butanes, which also included Robb Stupka on drums. In 2015 Walker launched his official comeback album “If Nothing Ever Changes”, co-produced by Rick Estrin and Kid Andersen, on the Little Village Foundation label. As a result, Walker received an invitation to perform at the prestigious Poretta Soul Festival where he first met Anthony Paule.

Since 2016, Walker has received twelve BMA nominations including Soul Blues Album of The Year, and Soul Blues Male Artist of The Year. Walker was also invited to perform in Norway; that set was recorded with The Greaseland All-stars and released as 2016’s “Live! At The Notodden Blues Festival Norway”. Walker died in 2019.

This posthumous recording features vocalist Walker, accompanied by Paule, guitar and sitar; Tony Lufrano, keyboards and horn arrangements; Andre Tarczy, bass; and drummer Kevin Hayes. The four-piece horn section includes Derek James, trombone; Bill Ortiz, trumpet; Charles McNeal, tenor sax; and Rob Sudduth, baritone sax. Background vocalists include Larry Batiste, Sandy Griffith, and Omega Rae. The album was recorded in California; and produced by Jim Gaines in Tennessee.

Nine of the fourteen songs, are co-written by Christine Vitale with members of the band; “Almost Memphis”. was written by bassist Tarczy. “If You’ve Walked in My Shoes” and “Warm To Cool To Cold”, are remakes of two of Walker’s classic early recordings. “A Word from Willie” is a poignant excerpt from a radio interview. As husband and wife, Ike & Tina Turner headed up one of the most potent live acts on the R&B circuit during the '60s and early '70s. Guitarist and bandleader Ike kept his ensemble tight and well-drilled while throwing in his own distinctively twangy plucking; lead vocalist Tina was a ferocious whirlwind of power and energy, a raw sexual dynamo who was impossible to contain when she hit the stage, leading some critics to call her the first female singer to embody the true spirit of rock & roll. In their prime, the Ike & Tina Turner Revue specialized in a hard-driving, funked-up hybrid of soul and rock that, in its best moments, rose to a visceral frenzy that few R&B acts of any era could hope to match. Effusively praised by white rock luminaries like the Rolling Stones and Janis Joplin, Tina was unquestionably the star of the show, with a hugely powerful, raspy voice that ranks among the all-time soul greats.

For all their concert presence, the Turners sometimes had problems translating their strong points to record; they cut singles for an endless succession of large and small independent labels throughout their career, and suffered from a shortage of the strong original material that artists with more stable homes (Motown, Atlantic, Stax, etc.) often enjoyed. The couple's well-documented marital difficulties (a mild way of describing Ike's violent, drug-fueled cruelty) eventually dissolved their partnership in the mid-'70s. EB Davis, one of Arkansas' great soul-blues singers, has a great CD out - EB Davis & The Superband: Live At The A-Trane Berlin - recorded before an enthusiastic crowd in the German capital where he has lived for many years. He'll remind you of Junior Parker (another former Arkansas resident), but you can hear traces in his voice of other great Arkansas performers he heard while growing up in the Delta in the 1950s and 1960s. The band is made up of both American and German musicians, including Davis' wife Nina on piano, organ and vocal. This CD presents a rollicking good time that will appeal to many blues fans.

Resurrection is blues-rocker Mike Zito ’s third album in a year and a half, and they’ve all been the same - but different. His tribute to Chuck Berry recorded in 2019 was just that, with the chestnuts reimagined in Zito’s heavier style. Last fall’s Quarantine Blues was mostly shutdown-themed songs that made the pandemic as much fun as it was ever going to get. With Resurrection, Zito is back on familiar blues-rock territory - equal parts soul/gospel influence and pile-driving riffage. No wheels are reinvented here, but there’s something to be said for doing a familiar thing with heart and style.

Press releases point out that Zito’s in a relationship that came close to breaking up while he was writing these songs, but it ultimately survived. And in truth, you wouldn’t need a press release to figure that out. “You Don’t Have Me” is very much a foot-out-the-door song, while the title track is a gospel-styled tune about love’s rebirth. His guitar does a lot of the talking on both, with a coiled-up nasty solo on the former and some beatific slide on the latter. His solos throughout are impressively flashy, though tasteful enough to not devolve into shredding, and there are a few slow burners for balance.

Nor is it all relationship songs: “Runnin’ Man” was clearly written around election time (“I say that I care with a weary sigh, just before I say goodbye”) and “Don’t Bring Me Down” seems to be addressed to social-media crap-posters. He also adds a shot of energy to well-covered songs by Eric Clapton (“Presence of the Lord”) and Clapton’s friend JJ Cale (“I’ll Make Love to You”). And Zito’s really best described by one of Clapton’s own albums titles, namely Journeyman. That’s something to be proud of if you’re doing it right. /Brett Milano, Offbeat Magazine

b. c. 1965, London, England. Martin played acoustic guitar from his mid-teens and was deeply influenced by early and middle period American folk musicians such as Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. Later influences included contemporary bluesmen such as Joe Hill Louis and Dr. Ross. He later took up the electric guitar and fell under the spell of Freddie King’s Texas blues playing. Despite these many influences, Martin very soon brought them under the wing of his own distinctive styling. He quickly built a reputation not only for his skill but also for the authority of his playing. In addition to working as a solo act, playing guitar, harmonica and singing, Martin has worked in trio with Marion Dolton (bass) and Michael Wiedrich (drums). He has also headed larger bands, usually using Dolton and Wiedrich, plus Jason Smith (trumpet), Dominic Norcross (saxophone) and Paddy Milner (keyboards).

In addition to playing and singing, Martin writes some of the material that he plays, bringing a contemporary British edge to the style and content of his lyrics while never losing an aural connection with the country blues and folk masters of the American past. Martin toured the USA in 1999, heading a trio, the Texas Blues Kings, with Guthrie Kennard (bass) and Jimmie ‘Blue Shoes’ Pendleton (drums). Based in Bristol, where he plays regularly at the Hard Rock Bar, Martin continues to tour in the 00s and regularly draws enthusiastic and appreciative crowds at blues venues throughout the UK.

He has also played in Europe, notably in France and Germany. Among his successes in Germany was his being named as an important innovator on harmonica at the 2006 World Harmonica Festival. In addition to playing clubs and concerts, Martin has also performed and composed for the soundtracks of films and television shows. Despite his success, Martin did not become a full-time musician until the late 90s. His 2006 trio featured Dolton and Wiedrich. Since it comes a whopping four years after her wildly successful major-label debut and Best New Artist Grammy nomination, the appropriately titled Wait for Me is a highly anticipated follow-up for an artist who nearly slipped into the "where is she now" bin. While the album doesn't totally justify the extended wait, Tedeschi returns with a tough, uncompromising release that's the equal of its predecessor. After touring the world, then marrying and having a baby (with husband/guitarist Derek Trucks), Tedeschi has shifted styles from guitar-slinging blues mama into a subtler but still passionate R&B approach. Trucks contributes a few of the album's bluesiest moments, laying into a slide solo on Paul Pena's exuberant "Gonna Move" that injects soul into its hooky chorus and bouncy groove. The title track's low-key horns, jazzy flourishes, and gospel underpinnings recall '60s Etta James, and a version of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" transforms the folk chestnut into a touching, torchy swamp ballad. It's here and on Tedeschi's own lovely "In the Garden" where her expressive vocals are a ringer for Bonnie Raitt's similar style. Those fired up by Just Won't Burn will easily warm to Wait for Me. With classy yet scorching performances and songs infused with roots rock, blues, funk, and even pop, it's a crossover album that oozes with integrity, terrific playing, and a loose yet distinctive direction. ~Hal Horowitz

As a YOUNGSTER growing up in the excitement of 1960's Hollywood, I had the good fortune to meet the giant of the blues that was MUDDY WATERS. It was at the world-famous RCA Victor studio on Sunset Boulevard in 1966, when MUDDY and his band participated in the recording sessions for what would become the, "Full Spoon Of Seedy Blues" album, by hot GNP Crescendo act The Seeds. Muddy was charming, friendly and charismatic, and now as I look back, I recognize that all of my heroes as musicians - Led Zeppelin, The Stones, AC/DC, The Yardbirds, John Mayall, Canned Heat, Ten Years After - were influenced by this genial father of the Chicago Blues. The big rock groups became superstars using many of his ideas!

I also didn't realize at the time that my father, the legendary Los Angeles disc jockey and entrepreneur Gene Norman, had previously presented Muddy in concert in the 1950's. My dad had a habit of professionally taping many of the great and groundbreaking events that he held at the Shrine, the Crescendo and other venues from the late 1940's on, and I am proud to present you one of those historic recordings here. I think you will agree it captures Muddy and his great band at the peak of their powers, and the superb sound quality and lively performance gives us that wonderful "you are there" experience.

As Gary Suarez wrote, "Rock (and sex), is nothing without the blues." This tape waited patiently in my dad's garage until Malcolm Cecil and I found it in the 1990's. Sean Chambers is proud to share that Howlin’ Wolf’s “faithful squire”, the legendary blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin is more than his mentor and reference for a lifetime. Chambers worked as part of Sumlin’s solo career for four years. Chambers is now releasing That’s What I’m Talkin About – Tribute to Hubert Sumlin. This is his eighth album. The songs embody a handful of Chambers’ musical influences, starting from SRV and several others musicians who he played with like Jeff Healey and Leslie West, just to cite a few. It’s worth noting that his previous album Welcome To My Blues (2018) spent one week at # 9 in the Billboard Blues Albums Chart in November 2018.

The album starts with “Howlin For My Darlin”, a powerful blues rock track a la Gary Moore. The birth of the song “Sittin On the Top Of The World” remounts to the 1930s with Mississippi Sheiks band. There have been tons of versions throughout numerous recordings. But Chambers “unexpectedly” choose Howlin Wolf’s version, surely adding his killer guitar tone. I had to admit that the first time I heard the “Hidden Charms” intro, I thought that my device inadvertently started playing some tracks from the Band Of Gypsies. Apart from that resemblance, it’s one of the best songs, bringing a fresh and joyful climate to the album as well as new clothes to that Willie Dixon’s tune (also recorded by Wolf, by the way…).

“Rockin Daddy” is a direct tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan since it’s an ode (or parody) of SRV’s “Shake For Me”. In “Goin Down Slow” Chambers distills brilliant guitar lines either between the parts or solo. This track also has detached Hammond harmonies going throughout it. “Fourty-Four” has an unusual drum pace making this track a little bit different, in spite of the melody and bluesy guitar solo. The blues rock is back with “Do The Do”, where the guitar riffs make one unison and highlight the slides.

“Chunky” is a powerhouse blues where the vocals yield the spot to the Hammond. “Louise” and “Tail Dragger” are closer to a slow blues with the keys assuming all the work from behind the scenes, letting the guitar shine. Chambers uses “Hubert Song” to properly express all his gratitude towards Hubert Sumlin’s mentoring and friendship. A nice acknowledgment as well as a great song.

I think the greatest virtue of That’s What I’m Talkin About is that it brings a pleasant air that exalts the brighter and more peaceful side of blues rock. This kind of approach was rarely observed in the albums made or released during the pandemic. It’s a great achievement and milestone in the Sean Chambers discography and sounds like a new sunrise for blues rock. The Review: 8.5/10 ~Marcel Innocentini

At 33 years of age, Isle of Man-born guitarist/singer/songwriter Davy Knowles can now add ‘Mascot Records Recording Artist’ to his long list of already impressive achievements.

Knowles first burst onto the scene in 2007 with his band ‘Back Door Slam’, garnering rave reviews, national US television appearances (Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America), extensive triple-A radio airplay, and two top 5 Billboard Blues charting albums. Since then, Knowles has independently released two more studio albums, 2014’s ‘The Outsider’ and 2016’s ‘Three Miles From Avalon’, which also hit the top 5 on the Billboard Blues chart. An EP, ‘1932’, showcasing his talents on acoustic guitar, specifically a 1932 National acoustic guitar, was released in early 2017.
An extensive tour schedule has ensured he has put in more than his ’10,000 hours’ on the road, including appearances with The Who, Jeff Beck, Gov’t Mule, Lynrd Skynrd, Kid Rock, Joe Bonamassa, Sonny Landreth, Peter Frampton, Joe Satriani, and the Sammy Hagar-fronted supergroup ‘Chickenfoot’ among many others. “It’s your job to be the worst player in the room, and absorb like a sponge” says Knowles of sharing the stage with his heroes. And it’s not just his heroes he’s played for, in 2010, he became the first musician in history to play live directly to the International Space Station from Mission Control in Houston.

Eddie Martin. For blues fans in the UK, he probably needs no introduction. But this cool dude deserves global attention for his prolific roots songwriting, vocal chops and sublime guitar skills – electric and acoustic.

Mr Martin’s latest album – his 17th – is a cut well above most UK-produced blues releases, and worthy of praise for its simplicity and less-is-more approach to the instrumentation, performances and arrangements.

But the material here is King and very classy. One cover, and 13 originals penned by Eddie. If raw and stripped-down, mostly acoustic blues and gospel are your bag, please step inside. (There’s one electric track here).

When the pandemic hit, like most pro’ musicians with no work and no band members to call upon for more than a year, Eddie learned how to sound engineer and how to play a few more instruments.

But above all else, he wrote, wrote and wrote new songs. “The Birdcage Sessions” idea was about new songs being set free like little birds, reminding, embodying and promising the feeling of freedom again.

The songs were inspired by the events of 2020-21. The murder of George Floyd and the BLM awakening had a big impact. Some songs began as tributes to guitar stylists from the Afro-American legacy whom Eddie has long studied.

Mick Clarke first attracted attention in 1968, playing guitar in the south London-based duo Killing Floor with Bill Thorndycraft (vocals/harmonica). They made two well-received albums, Killing Floor in 1969 and Out of Uranus the following year. Killing Floor played in London and elsewhere in the U.K., backing American bluesman Freddie King, and also jammed with other visitors, including Howlin' Wolf. In mid-1972 Killing Floor folded, but Clarke played with Daddy Longlegs before forming his own band, Salt, in the mid-'70s, recording the rare EP All Wired Up in 1978. After a spell in the United States, Clarke returned to the U.K. at the start of the '80s to form the Mick Clarke Band. For the next two decades the band worked extensively, touring the U.K. and Europe, receiving critical acclaim for their live shows and albums. Critics and audiences in the U.S. also reacted very favorably to the band. In 2005 the band included drummer Chris Sharley (drums, ex-Sassafras), Dave Rea (bass), and Dave Lennox (keyboards). Among other musicians who have worked with Clarke over the years are keyboard player Peter Terry; bass players Mick Phillips, Len Davies, Ian Ellis, Eddie Masters, and Russell Prett; blues harpists Stevie Smith, Dave Newman and Mark Feltham; and drummers Ron Berg, Slash, Mike Hirsh, and Wilgar Campbell. An important part of the repertoire of Clarke's bands are his own compositions, which include "Murderers' Home," "Cheap," "Walking in the Dark," "The Killingest Place," "Second Hand Dream," and "New Star Over Texas."

In my 20 years of playing music full-time in St. Louis (2000-2020), I always put Tradition First. When I first ventured down into East St. Louis in search of the Truth, my goal was to play with – and more importantly, develop chemistry with – as many St. Louis musicians as possible. Not my band in competition with everyone else, but to seek out and learn from everyone; bring musicians who had never collaborated together; and showcase their oft-underappreciated greatness.

This family-like community of musicians - and especially the Elders of our St. Louis Roots, Rhythm, Blues, Jazz, Soul & Funk Tradition in Saint Louis - made me who I am today: someone I can Love and Live with, thanks to the Love, Patience, and Encouragement that was so generously poured into me; my cup is full to the brim.

Full albums, they say, are yesterday’s news: It’s all about churning out singles in a bid to stay “relevant” these days. But this album is different in many ways. This album puts ensemble musicianship front and center. It cannot be faked; there are no shortcuts. It took a lifetime of dedication and commitment to author this intangible material into existence. Inasmuch as the Truth is a concept, it is a concept album, offering a geographic and chronological glimpse of 20 years in the trenches in service to the Mission, so to speak, with no shortage of poetry and even… prophecy (“Getaway”).

“Mississippi Stew” is a St. Louis record, through and through. The album features 16 world-class St. Louis musicians. It was recorded and engineered in four sessions at three elite St. Louis studios: Sawhorse Studios (Jason McEntire), Native Sound Studios (Ben Majchrzak), and Red Pill Studios (Jacob Detering). This record was produced independently; without label support - on a shoestring budget, cobbled together playing night after night on the streets of Saint Louis.

What I love best about “Mississippi Stew” is that there is something for everyone: It’s a drummer’s record, a guitarist’s record, an organist’s record, a pianist’s record, a horn player’s record, a vocalist’s record, a bassist’s record, an engineer’s record, a producer’s record… Everyone involved is featured in shining capacity, and yet the sum is even greater than the parts - and it all weaves together brilliantly. When you listen to the effortless expression and interplay between the musicians, a deeper connection – an Ancient Truth - is revealed within the intersection and evaporation of conscious and unconscious. For my part, it comes down to serving something bigger than Self, to the point that Self cannot be separated from all else. We as musicians and Seekers get to author that Truth in Time and Space.

The global digital release of “Missisippi Stew” represents an opportunity to celebrate and support the Saint Louis live music community and Old School Tradition – oft overlooked in these days; to honor the Elders who came before, and set the bar so high - especially those who took me under their wings at a young age and set me on the Path I’ve walked for 20 years; and to inspire and elevate the younger generations of St. Louis musicians and artistic facilitators who will carry the Tradition into the future, Honor the past and give their All for the Present. I am grateful for the Love and Support I’ve received for 20 years, and I humbly ask for you to continue your support in the years to come. It is well spent, and priceless to me.

With this, his third release on Fat Possum Records, T-Model Ford takes his place as one of the label's elder statesmen, quite an accomplishment on a label loaded with septuagenarians.

Ford doesn't pull any punches on She Ain't None of Your'n. The electronic loops and beats that have slowly crept into so many of the label's recent blues releases are noticeably absent. Instead listeners are left with a strong collection of raw, timeless Delta blues.

As on Ford's previous albums, tracks range from the sublime (e.g., "Sail On") to the bizarre (e.g., "Chicken Head Man"), but even the most indulgent moments here are powered by strong grooves.

On most of the album's tracks, Ford's guitar and vocals are accompanied only by drums. He and longtime drummer Spam had a falling out during the recording of the album, so Bryan Barry and the legendary Sam Carr split drumming duties on about half the tracks. There is no appreciable difference in their playing styles. Frank Frost, in one of his final recording appearances, contributes keyboards on two tracks.

In addition to the aforementioned "Sail On," a number of blues standards are included on the album such as "How Many More Years" and "Mother's Gone."

On a whole, She Ain't None of Your'n is a slight improvement over 1998's You Better Keep Still, but the differences are fairly negligible. Those who enjoyed Ford's previous albums will like this one as well, but it is not likely to make many converts. ~Jeff Konkel

Multi award-winner Steve Marriner, who is quite possibly the hardest-working Canadian in the music business, raises his game yet again with his brand new solo album Hope Dies Last. Set to release on Stony Plain Records, the record finds the absurdly-talented Marriner exploring a new, Americana-informed sound that he’s not worked in before and using the engineering and mixing skills he developed during his pandemic downtime to handle the technical aspects of making the record. The result of all this forward motion is a new set of music that shows multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer Marriner at the absolute peak of his powers with no limits in sight. The ten new songs on Hope Dies Last were inspired by Marriner’s life as a touring musician and that path has clearly given him some stories to tell.

Marriner is an over-achieving talent from Ottawa who has been a popular and critical favorite since first emerging playing harp and singing with the blues trio Monkeyjunk over a decade ago. The group has dropped six albums and won multiple JUNO and Maple Blues Awards in several categories. He’s also done fine work on harp with Colin James on stage and on the album Miles To Go and with Harry Manx on their chart-topping 2019 duo effort Hellbound for Heaven. He also plays guitar with Paul Reddick and guitar, bass, and keyboards in Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar. To say that Marriner never stops moving is an understatement. He spends at least half of each year on the road and is obsessed with continually growing his career and craft.

Marriner launches the album with the 70s-inspired blues/rock of “Take Me To The City.” It’s a gravelly hard rocker that immediately shows off Steve’s vocal skills over a seriously-pumping drum groove and some growling guitars. Marriner’s harp work here is scalding, as well, and his tone is the stuff of dreams. “Honey Bee” is a grinding blues cut in the “King Bee” tradition that moves the metaphor into the present day. It’s a raw, shuffling track that sounds like it would heat up any roadhouse out there quite properly. Marriner has a knack for not over-producing and does an excellent job in keeping a track like this sounding as it should. People want to hear something real these days and Steve gives them all they can handle.

“Somethin’ Somethin’” is an epic, mid-speed venting session born out of a bad mental health day and captured almost exactly as it was first imagined. It begins with just voice and percussion before Marriner’s instrumental tracks take command. Backup singers Samantha Martin and Mwansa Mwansa add a haunting, graceful presence and Aaron Goldstein gets downright nasty on pedal steel. The lyrics are genuine and relatable to anyone who has survived this kind of day in their own lives.

The wonderful “Petite Danse” is a Big Easy-style romp and the first time Marriner has recorded a song in the French language. It’s cool to hear his bilingual side, which has helped him bond with crowds in Quebec and France, put to such entertaining use in the studio after all this time. Marriner rubs the groove just right and makes this one a winner. Other highlights on Hope Dies Last are “Coal Mine,” “Enough,” and “Hear My Heart.” The acoustic closing song “Long Way Down” takes an unflinching look at addictions and the people who struggle with them. It’s a well-written finisher in which a lot of listeners will recognize themselves or someone they love. Steve Marriner is always top-shelf and he definitely keeps that energy up on Hope Dies Last. An R&B vocalist who puts her own contemporary spin on classic Southern soul, Ms. Jody has become a favorite in blues and soul circles for her often witty songs that speak the truth about life and love. Ms. Jody is the stage name of Joanne Vertie Delapaz, who was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 10, 1957. When Delapaz was two years old, her family moved to Bay Springs, Mississippi, where she still lives today. Her father was a minister, and she grew up on gospel music. Delapaz says she's been singing as far back as she can remember; growing up in the country, she would sing to the birds and animals as a child, and in 1975 she graduated to performing in her dad's church. Delapaz sang in church for over two decades, but after the death of her father and the end of her first marriage, she dropped out of music for a while.

In 2004, Delapaz attended a blues show with her brother that was headlined by Denise LaSalle; Delapaz enjoyed the show and went home inspired to give singing R&B a try. After learning the ropes of singing, Delapaz struck up a friendship with the members of a local R&B group called Total Control. The musicians put Delapaz in contact with Morris J. Williams, a songwriter and producer who often worked with the Southern soul label Ecko Records. With Williams' help, Delapaz made her first demo recordings, and then dropped by the Ecko Records offices to give them a copy. The Ecko staff quickly decided Delapaz was just the sort of artist they were looking for, and struck a deal with her.

Adopting the stage name Ms. Jody, her first album, You're My Angel, was released by Ecko in March 2006, and her second, What You Gonna Do When the Rent Is Due?, arrived the following November. Ms. Jody's sexy, streetwise style gained her a following among fans of Southern soul and blues, and she recorded prolifically, releasing ten original albums for Ecko between 2006 and 2016. Ms. Jody also enjoyed a busy schedule as a live performer, playing clubs and festival dates in the South and West, occasionally branching out for gigs in California and the Midwest. In 2017, the hardworking Ms. Jody returned with the album I Got the Feeling, while continuing to play for her fans on a regular basis. ~Mark Deming
