This is some great, period, hard edged r & b and soul from deep in Chicago during the prime years 1962-70. Mixed in are a few smoother sides which add variety. All these sides are from small, local labels One-Derful, M-Pac, Toddlin' Town, and Mar-V-Lus. There's a few tracks licensed from outside sources. The discs are housed in a sturdy hardback package, and is up to the usual Charly Records standards.
The tracks are presented in chronological order, which is informative (for those of us who like such things) and is pretty cool besides. The attached-by-staples booklet (which will soon fall out) has track by track information on the artists, along with period photos and graphics. There's no original recording source listed for these tracks, but many (all?) sound like they came from vinyl sources. But most are pretty good/good sounding. But there are exceptions-but what's important here is the music. Besides, the "old style" sound is perfect for this music. There's no compression or anything else to ruin the period sound-audiophiles you've been warned.
Some of the better known artists include Alvin Cash with The Crawlers (hear his "Twine Time"), Lonnie Brooks (as Guitar Jr.) mostly known in blues circles (listen to "The Popeye"), the great Betty Everett (what a singer!), Harold Burrage (his early Cobra sides are great and now largely forgotten in the present), Billy "The Kid" Emerson (who recorded several fine early sides on Sun Records), Otis Clay (Southern soul/gospel singer), and Johnny Sayles (more fans should know about this Chicago soul man). But there's also some good things from a number of the lesser known (or completely unknown) performers that gives this collection some added weight and depth, plus a little mystery. The Five Du-Tones' "Shake A Tail Feather" and "That's How I Love You" (which is from a scratchy vinyl source), The Sharpees' "Tired Of Being Alone", Cicero Blake's "Sad Feeling", "One Man's Poison" by Liz Landis, McKinley Mitchell's "The Town I Live In", Benny Turner's "Come Back Home" (with his polished vocals), Harold Burrage ("Master Key"), Dorothy Prince (a great gospel style voice), Joseph Moore's stomping "I Still Can't Get You", the Toddlin' Town Sounds' instrumental "It's Your Thing" (made famous by the Isley Brothers), and others make this set worth hearing for fans of this music.
Will you like all the tunes here? Maybe not. But overall, this is a good collection of pretty tough r & b and soul (partly due to the blues influence in the area), from a prime era, in a city known for this music. The title pretty much says it all, "Move With The Groove". ~Stuart Jefferson
