The king of West Side blues guitar was a young gent named Sam Maghett, known by his singular stage name, Magic Sam. He had a style all his own, laced with vibrato and rapid fire barrages of bent notes. His soul steeped vocal delivery was every bit as distinctive as his fretwork.
The precise date when this performance was captured at Silvio's has been in question over the years, though December of 1966 is cited by one reliable source. Mark Thompson remained Sam's right hand man on bass, Odie Payne, Elmore James long time drummer sat in and Sam's uncle, and Shakey Jake sat in to share the vocal load and blow some harmonica.
This is a re-release of the Black Top cd from 1993. A fiery live recording that captures the intensity of this West Side Chicago guitar master. This set is a textbook example of modern blues played right.

I have a mp3 copy of the vinyl. The notes on the back cover say it was recorded in December 1968.
Bad sound quality, better get the on Live at the Avantgarde 1968, which is the only good quality live Magic Sam album
Thanks for your comment Tip79. Yes, the info on the LP says it was recorded in 1968 (LP front & back cover is included in the folder for this post). However, the front cover on the Black Top cd reissue from 1993, entitled "Magic Touch", says "recorded live at Sylvio's, Chicago, 1966". Also, the liner notes for that release says it was recorded in December 1966. Kind of confusing though, especially since the LP version is entitled "Magic Touch: Live At Sylvios 1968". Anyway, the music is nice stuff and that's the main thing.
