On Trouble’s Door, Ash Grunwald comes out of the gate swinging. From the first note, his latest album sports a premium of finely-crafted blues. The songwriting is solid, the presentation perfect, and the vibe vivacious.
Grunwald released his first album in 2002, and has been active ever since. He hails from Australia, but his music takes him all over the world. His main claim to unique fame is his method of fusing traditional blues with beats and rhythms influenced by hip-hop.
Trouble’s Door was produced by Grunwald himself, and he makes the most of that creative control as he brings his music to vibrant life. There’s a lot here to appeal to fans of many genres, as Grunwald makes himself and his music very accessible and easy to appreciate. His songwriting flawlessly interweaves clever lyrics through a metrical tapestry of tunes. As he effortlessly combines traditional and non-traditional instrumentation and musical methods, his true talent quickly rises to the surface. Trouble’s Door is such a tight and well-executed record that it’s tough to pick a favorite track. That’s usually a good sign, and it certainly is in this case. It’s so refreshing to see an artist do new things while still staying true to blues roots. Ash Grunwald is a fantastic musician, and so it’s not surprising that Troubles’s Door is a fantastic album.
