He was born Aleck "Rice" Miller into a large family on December 5, 1899 in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. At the age of five he taught himself to play the harmonica and was soon giving concerts wherever he could, billed as "Little Boy Blue".

Williamson was the author of such well-known blues classics as "One Way Out" and "Help Me". His rich voice and virtuoso harmonica playing were to make him one of the best known bluesmen of all time.
