In a short time, the KokoMojo label released four volumes in the "Rock and Roll Vixens" series. When we briefly run through the track list of these albums, you will inevitably come to the following conclusion. Although many African-American female singers coincided with the release of volume 1 "Soulfood", volume 2 "Cornbread & Cabbage Greens" was also released. By the way, you can read the review of "Soulfood" here. "Cornbread & Cabbage Greens" refers to the plant-based diet of the African population who were brought to America as slaves. Given the appalling living conditions, they were actually more or less forced vegetarians. For them, meat was a luxury product that was only served in small quantities and at special events. And yet, with the little available to them, they developed a tasty food culture. A food culture that also found its way into music, as the 28 songs collected here show. The title of this volume is taken from the well-known song, an optimistic instrumental swinging rhythm & blues by Joe Houston and his Rockers, who are allowed to close. But there is still a lot more to enjoy. Such as from striker Wynonie Harris, who puts down a nice upbeat rhythm & blues with "Git With The Grits". Harris is followed by the blues harp instrumental "Candied Yams" by B. Brown And His Rockin "McVouts. The vocal jazzy The Ink Spots sound a bit more laidback in "Do-Nuts". A little later, blues guitarist Jody Williams surprises with "Moaning For Molasses", a gem of an instrumental. The same can be said of the sax driving "Potato Mash" of Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm, after which Washboard Sam hails "Good Old Cabbage Greens" in unadulterated blues style. Classroom Louis Jordan shines in his well-known style in "Beans And Cornbread". Well known certainly sounds "Sack" by Ben Hughes, a song he recorded for Specialty in 1958. Also worthy of a mention is Julia Lee for her jazzy "The Spinach Song (I Didn't Like It The First Time)". Sublime! For a formidable acoustic blues you can turn to Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and "Custard Pie Blues" a little later.

Partly due to the beautiful mix of instrumental and sung tracks, "Volume 2, Cornbread & Cabbage Greens" is sure to hit the "Koko-Mojo Diner" bullseye. ~Lambert Smits
