This album by Stefano Ronchi and Marcos Coll is a very pleasant surprise, and the album unites three countries. Stefano "Slidin' Wolf" Ronchi is an Italian singer-guitarist who was inspired by the 1920s/30s country blues and spirituals. He was a part of bands like Bluesrags and Tonky Blues. In 2004 he moved to Berlin where he bumped into Spanish harmonica player Marcos Coll. A collaboration was quickly formed with this album as a result. The duo likes variety and dares to take risks. For example, two songs are played with modern beats and electronics. In Trust, the country blues are supported by funky beats and electronics and even a rap can be heard. None of this detracts from the raw country blues.
In the closing instrumental Hip Harp, a tearing harmonica steals the leading role over a forest of funky hip hop beats and all kinds of samples. A very special funky blues song. The album opens with the swampy thumping sounds of the country blues Long Leg Blues. The rhythm is determined by just a bass drum and snare drum. She's Got It is a raw boogie with razor-sharp guitar and harmonica riffs, supported by an anonymous (due to a lack of info) drummer. A song John Lee Hooker would be proud of. Can't Share Your Love is a light country blues shuffle with warm harmonica. It's a song by Guitar Crusher, who sings the song in his raw, broken voice.
In Me And The Devil, the harmonica sound is passed through all kinds of distorters, creating a very special spacey sound. This fits perfectly into the atmospheric blues number. Oddly enough, the primitive thumping boogie My Last Pair Of Shoes reminded me of Mungo Jerry's “good time” music. Light cajun influences appear in the fresh sparkling country blues On Revival Day while Ry Cooder seems close in the funky shuffle La Mujer Del Capitán. An instrumental song, except for the spoken word contribution, with raw harmonica and sparkling mandolin. The adventurous nature of this duo has done this album a lot of good. Highly recommended for both country blues fans and the more adventurous blues fans.
