Wallace Coleman is a 2002 Living Blues Award Winner for Most Outstanding Harmonica. Coleman earned his professional status as a Robert Jr. Lockwood sideman for 10 years, traveling the world to play Traditional Blues. In 1997, Coleman formed his own band and began a new professional music path. He also formed his own label and each of the first 2 releases garnered Living Blues Award Nominations; with a win in 2002.

Living Blues Award Winner (Harmonica) Wallace Coleman turns the tables in this 3rd release on his Pinto Blue Music label. This time it is predominantly original (10 originals; 4 covers). In addition, Coleman and band are joined by Blues veterans Bob Stroger (bass) and Billy Flynn (guitar). The result is a driving Chicago sound when called for, with Coleman at the fore; or sweet, thoughtful sounds, such as the original instrumental "Blue Mist," among others. Flynn also lends masterful slide guitar on several tracks. This CD offers something for everyone, but Traditional Blues lovers will especially appreciate what they hear.

Singer and harp player Wallace Coleman first met Robert Lockwood Jr. in 1985. They became fast friends, with Coleman playing in the local bluesman's band for a decade. Coleman recalls their friendship in "Robert Jr.," the anchor to this 10-song set dedicated to his late pal. Blues in the Wind pays tribute to the Cleveland legend in songs like the somber title track and the sarcastic "Too Much Time on My Hands." Other highlights include the juke-joint jam "Uptown Blues" and the swaggering piano-harmonica ballad "Sinking Sun." The album's weakest track, a cover of Sting's "Fields of Gold," proves that Coleman is much better when he sticks to his own material or the traditional tunes he used to play with his friend. — Jeff Niesel
