CHERYL LESCOM has been part of the Canadian Blues Scene for over 30 years. Starting off as a back up singer for Ronnie Hawkins and Long John Baldry, Cheryl has recorded, toured and performed with the likes of Jeff Healy, Matt Minglewood, Dutch Mason the Downchild Blues Band and more. After an absence to raise a family, Cheryl recorded two independent CD’s before taking some time off to recover from a bout with Cancer. HIGH HEELED BLUES is her first CD for flamingcheese records. The CD features 14 songs including “Queen Bee” written by Juno Award winner (and the CD’s producer and guitarist) Jack De Keyzer, “I Can’t Stand It” written by Mr. Downchild, Donnie Walsh (who guests on the CD) and “Beg Borrow Steal” written by Matt Minglewood. The first single “Heartache” features additional vocals by the Detroit Women and piano from Juno nominee Julian Fauth.

As Hillary Clinton says “It takes a village to raise a child”. Well then I can say “it takes a village to make a CD”… and in this case, a WONDERFUL uplifting CD! Cheryl Lescom truly has a great talent and is now at the top of her game. Although she has been in the business for more than 30 years, High Heeled Blues is a beginning for Cheryl. Not a beginning in the traditional sense, but a beginning just the same. Cheryl has toured with many major recording artists and has paid her dues over the years. A couple of years ago, Cheryl was in the fight of her life (literally). She battled cancer with the energy and conviction that you will hear on this CD, and in true Lescom form, she not won the battle, but became a stronger more focused person determined to really live life to the fullest. Cheryl joined the flamingcheese family in 2005 to make a record that she would proud of. A lot of time went into the preparation of this CD; choosing Juno Award Winner Jack de Keyzer to produce, choosing the band and going through hundreds of songs to pick the best material. I hope you agree with me that the time was well spent. As you can see from the thank you’s the guest list below, Cheryl has some amazing friends in her village, and they will all continue to support her on her high heeled journey through life AND the blues!

Authentic, powerful and filled with gutsy emotion Cheryl Lescom has released one of the best blues/roots cd’s of 2015 with 1953.

Opening with the street life hustle of Dime Store Lover, then gliding into the 50’s radio friendly Soul Shakin’ Romance and channeling a modern day Lena Horne vocal on songwriter Lynn Jackson’s Surrender, Lescom hits the heart’s centre.

Not enough can be said about how well the players in the Tucson Choir Boys and the guest musicians understand the soul of the material.

Dave The Cat, Les Graham, Sameday Ray, Kristine Walsh and Robert Reid pull off gorgeous chops on the beautiful It’s Not You It’s Me which has a standout vocal by Lescom.

In fact, it’s one of the prettiest tracks I have heard over the last few years on any level.

Then, there’s the powerful mid tempo track Places I’ve Been also written by Lynn Jackson and the punchy lioness fire of Nice Mix of Crazy.

Either way, Lescom and Tucson Choir Boys turn out a distinct and powerful performance. ~By John Emms
