Yank Rachell - Complete Recorded Works Vols 1 & 2

Yank Rachell played with some of the most outstanding blues singers and musicians of the 1930s, and won the respect of all who have known him. Figures as Sleepy John Estes or John Lee Williamson depended so much on the kind of support he provided. Rachell was on of the rather select group of blues musicians who played mandolin which should be enough to single him out from the crowd, but the obession of most blues fans with the guitar had been to his disadvantage. Rachell played guitar too (and violin and harmonica), but his preferred instrument was always the mandolin. It's ringing sounds imparts a special quality to the recordings on which he appearead. Yank grew up on a farm, but as a youngster he played dances in the country. Music took up more of his time when he brought more dollars home. At 18, he left home and worked as a laborer on the L&N railroad, which ran down to Memphis. But he didn't make it his life's work because a few years later he teamed up with Sleepy John Estes to play the streets for tips. Estes and Rachell made their first recordings in Memphis in 1929 and except for a couple they all had Estes taking the vocals. One night, playing in Jackson, Yank met John Lee Williamson and this fortuitous meeting led to a new partnership and new recordings (until Williamson's early death in 1948).
