There is some stunningly good blues and R 'n’ B out of Canada, there must be something in the water! Sons Of Rhythm are a delightfully effective band, from the Greater Toronto Area, who mix traditional blues with rock ‘n’ Roll and Funk with an added dash of country, This is their debut EP and is an excellent indication of what to expect. The band consists of singer and bassist Mick Maratta whose funky rhythm section is anchored by Mike Carbone on drums. Federico Luiu provides a skilful and unique interpretation of the blues as the group’s lead guitarist. Since their inception they have added sax and keys to great effect.
The EP consists of 24+ minutes in six tracks which are beautifully recorded and with deep core of funkiness to them the band produces some nice harmonies in their joint vocals and front man Maratta has a super voice too. One of the delights is that, in a tradition inherited from some of the old country and western singers, the lyrics are enunciated clearly and effectively. “Ain’t no use singin’ a song if folks can’t understand the words,” All in all a great debut that needs wide exposure. ~Ian K.
