Born in 1942 and afflicted with the need to Boogie by age three, I have always been drawn to jump up music and to lyrics with something other than the mundane to say. I describe myself as a songwriter / singer because I write better than I sing, and I have been writing songs for nearly 60 years. I am father to four amazing children, two boys, two girls; and it was at their suggestion that I started the songwriting and recording project of a lifetime...an anthology and musical memoir. In that process I have begun to write again, and I am including both revived and recent compositions in my collection.
I grew up in Atlanta before it became the city it is today, and I was influenced early on by Black Gospel families like the Franklins and the Staples. Soon after I fell under the spell of the early blues men and women, and crossover R&B artists like Ray Charles. The cross genre styles that characterize my music can be traced first to them and later to my regional exposure to country gospel, country blues, and mountain music / bluegrass influences. The exposure and impact continued up through Folk, Rock, and other styles that caught my fancy across those years. My ability to be influenced and guided by the work of others continues today.
Parenting and "day job" responsibilities kept my career as a performing musician either dormant of sporadic across my midlife years. That was as I planned it, and I have no complaints. It was near my eventual retirement from a 34 year career as a special educator that I slipped and slid back into the performing arena with the formation of The DaddyO's Band, a working Blues and R&B cover band that soon began performing the old and new tunes that we put together as I group. We kept it going for 14 years. Known at that time as Dr. DaddyO, I fronted that group as lead vocalist and primary writer. Age and health issues finally put up roadblocks the we could not work around, but some of that crew has transitioned with me into the present project push. That experience has proven to be my training ground for the present work at hand.
