Singer and pianist Gordon led a fine jump quintet throughout the 50s that included Billy Brooks on trumpet and ‘Little’ Hiawatha Edmundson on tenor saxophone. Beginning with Decca Records’ 48000 R&B series in 1952, with which the band recorded the insulting ‘Damp Rag’, the Gordon band recorded excellent tracks for Mercury Records in 1953 - including an uproarious celebration of the then recent Kinsey Sex Report in ‘What’s Her Whimsey Dr Kinsey?’ - and later recorded for Chess Records and Savoy in the mid-50s. ~AMG
