In my life as a musician, I have played instrumental versions of many popular songs. “Come Together” is a continuation of this concept. I was lucky enough to find these four songs that “spoke” to me near the time that the album was recorded. In some ways, this CD is a tribute to the wonderful songwriters of my recent past. The Allman Brothers Band was one of the many Hammond organ bands in the 1960’s that made me, an accordion player, want to learn how to play organ. “Whippin Post,” with its 11/8 and 12/8 sections, is a tip of my cap to Gregg Allman.
I have always loved Stevie Wonder’s music, and after trying a few of his songs, “Bird of Beauty” got stuck in my brain. I had “help” with “Come Together” when, another musician in my circle of friends, started playing it one night in the “wrong” key. It turned out that I could play the bass line better with my feet in this “wrong” key. After hearing another instrumental version of “Fragile,” I heard some “Jazzier” chords that were possible in this song. The beginning and ending of this song just “happened” as we were recording, so I left it in.
